Qs to expand your curiosity

Qs to expand your curiosity

Curiosity is a lot like a muscle: the more you use it, the more powerful it becomes. I’ve always had a voice inside that urges me to learn and seek to understand, so I can make a better contribution. Even if your inner voice isn’t speaking up so much, curiosity is something you can train yourself in.  When thinking about how you can bring your best, here are some questions to provoke your curiosity...

  1. What do you want?  For the best results, get 100% personally invested. Get curious about why you do what you do.
  2. What is possible?  This takes you away from a tunnel vision view of the task in hand and gets you to use your curiosity to concentrate on possibilities.
  3. What’s at risk? The fears we have are usually based on failure or how we might be judged. Why not stand from the future and look back to see what's the worst that could happen … ?
  4. What are you assuming? Get curious with your assumptions. Why are they there and what are they influencing?
  5. What is confusing you?  Lack of clarity can easily be as much of a blocker to positive action as worrying about the risks. If you’re confused, being curious will lead you to question what the source of that confusion is.
  6. What’s important here?  Time to take a step back and refocus on the things that matter most. Is your energy being channeled into those places where it can have the most impact?
  7. What will a successful outcome look like?  Use your curiosity to take a hard look at success, what it means and where it really comes from.
  8. What is the struggle? What’s the one thing above all that’s making it difficult? Dig deep to really interrogate that.

"Curiosity" fits well with an understanding of "Dialog", where exploration and openness are key-aspects. By asking really open questions and understanding hidden assumptions, we avoid misunderstandings, that occur far more often then one would think, e.g. in intercultural or interdisciplinery settings. And we might discover new views and perspectives that enrich our view.
