ChatGPT is now voice-enabled

OpenAI has introduced two innovative ways to engage with its flagship large language model in a significant update. You can engage in spoken conversations with the chatbot, simulating a phone call, and it can also provide answers to inquiries about images. This conversational capability leverages two distinct models. Whisper, OpenAI's pre-existing speech-to-text model, transforms spoken words into text, which is then transmitted to the chatbot. Additionally, a new text-to-speech model converts the responses generated by ChatGPT into audible speech. The significance of these updates lies in OpenAI's rapid transformation of experimental models into highly sought-after products. Since the unexpected success of ChatGPT last November, OpenAI has dedicated much effort to refining its technology and offering it to both individual consumers and commercial partners, including Spotify.

Scientists warn of an accelerating wildlife loss

According to researchers, animal species are disappearing at a rate 35 times higher than the average, primarily due to human activity. This serves as further evidence that the Earth is currently experiencing and accelerating toward a sixth mass extinction event in its history. In their analysis of closely related animal species' extinction rates over the past 500 years, scientists have determined that, in the absence of human influence, these species would have taken 18,000 years to become extinct. Alarmingly, the pace of species loss is on the rise. The findings, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, reveal that a minimum of 73 mammal, bird, reptile, and amphibian species groupings have gone extinct since 1500.

Microsoft AI researchers accidentally exposed 38TB of data

This case serves as an illustration of the emerging risks that organizations encounter when they extend their use of AI, involving more of their engineers in handling extensive training data. As data scientists and engineers rush to deploy new AI solutions, the substantial volume of data they deal with necessitates heightened security measures and safeguards. In an unintended incident, Microsoft's AI research team, while making a repository of open-source training data available on GitHub, inadvertently exposed an additional 38 terabytes of sensitive private data. This exposed data included a backup of two employees' workstations, containing confidential information such as secrets, private keys, passwords, and more than 30,000 internal Microsoft Teams messages.

NASA lands samples of asteroid Bennu after historic 4-billion-mile journey

In a groundbreaking achievement for the United States, NASA has safely landed its first-ever samples from an asteroid in deep space on Earth. During a recent operation conducted at the U.S. Army's Dugway Proving Ground in the dry Utah desert, collaborative teams from NASA and the U.S. Air Force successfully retrieved a space capsule containing samples collected from the asteroid Bennu by NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft in 2020. This mission represents a historic milestone, marking NASA's initial collection and successful recovery of an asteroid sample.

Kazakhstan established a regulatory agency to implement CBDC

The National Bank of Kazakhstan (NBK) has created a distinct entity tasked with spearheading the creation and adoption of the country's central bank digital currency (CBDC), known as the digital tenge. As per an official announcement made on September 15, the newly established National Payment Corporation (NPC) is a transformation of the Kazakhstan Center for Interbank Settlements. This freshly formed entity will assume responsibility for managing the national payment system, encompassing interbank clearing services, fund transfers, and digital identity verification. Furthermore, the NPC will take charge of developing the "digital financial infrastructure," which includes the implementation of the digital tenge.
