Saturn reclaims 'moon king' title with 62 newfound satellites
A groundbreaking revelation has emerged from the realm of astronomy as 62 previously unseen moons encircle the majestic planet Saturn. This remarkable celestial assembly elevates Saturn's moon count beyond the remarkable threshold of 100 - effectively reinstating the gas giant as the undisputed "Moon King " of our solar system, triumphing over its rival, Jupiter. Until this extraordinary breakthrough, the International Astronomical Union had officially recognized Saturn as the host of a distinguished retinue of 83 moons. However, with the recent addition of this newfound cohort, Saturn's celestial entourage now stands at an awe-inspiring total of 145. This momentous achievement etches yet another remarkable feat for Saturn, solidifying its position as the first known celestial body to be encircled by an extraordinary multitude of over 100 moons.
EU hits Meta with record €1.2B privacy fine
Meta, the prominent technology giant, has encountered a historic penalty of €1.2 billion for its non-compliance with the European Union's privacy regulations. The Irish Data Protection Commission, officially declared that Meta had violated the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This violation occurred when Meta transferred vast amounts of personal data belonging to European Facebook users to the United States without adequately safeguarding them against the data surveillance practices of the Washington authorities.
This fine represents the largest monetary sanction ever imposed under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which stands as the cornerstone of the European Union's privacy legislation. Significantly, this penalty arrives on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the enforcement of this law on May 25, underscoring its continued importance and the commitment to upholding data protection. It is noteworthy that Luxembourg had previously fined Amazon €746 million, while the Irish regulator had already imposed several fines on Meta's platforms, namely Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, ranging from €225 million to €405 million over the past two years.
A soft e-skin mimics the way human skin can sense things
Resembling the thinness and elasticity of natural skin, this electronic skin adheres to surfaces much like a Band-Aid. Equipped with built-in sensors, it accurately detects external temperature and pressure, relaying this information as electrical signals to a brain-implanted electrode. These signals exhibit varying frequencies, aiding the brain in distinguishing between different sensations, such as a gentle caress versus a firm handshake, the contrast between a strawberry and an apple, or the disparity between hot and cold stimuli. By providing this sensory feedback, the electronic skin opens doors for improved functionality and a more natural experience for individuals utilizing prosthetics.
We are likely headed to cross the dangerous 1.5C threshold within 5 years
According to a recent report by the United Nations (U.N.) and its World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the world is on the brink of surpassing the critical threshold established by the Paris Agreement. The report forecasts that within the next five years, the global average temperature will likely exceed the 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.6 degrees Fahrenheit) limit above pre-industrial levels. This projection, if realized, would mark an unprecedented event in human history. The WMO's annual assessment emphasizes that there is a 66% probability of witnessing a temporary breach of the 1.5 degrees Celsius milestone for annual mean global surface temperatures.
Future space food could be made from astronaut breath
The realm of space food is poised to embrace a potential future that is both unconventional and extraordinary. Imaginative concepts such as a protein shake crafted from astronaut breath or a burger fashioned from fungus may become the new norm. Traditionally, astronauts have predominantly relied on pre-packaged meals or sporadic cultivation of lettuce during their ventures beyond Earth. However, with ambitions set on missions surpassing Earth's orbit, a competition led by NASA seeks to revolutionize the field of space food , paving the way for a sustainable era of cosmic culinary exploration.
