QLD's Cyber Community Gathers to Discuss How to Improve Security and Business Synergy

This week’s CISO Brisbane 2024 conference agenda highlighted critical discussions and insights into enhancing organisational cybersecurity strategies.

Some of the keynote presentations included Australia’s Cyber Security Strategy, led by Will Hood from the Department of Home Affairs, emphasising the collective responsibility for cybersecurity across organisations.

One of the sessions explored a risk-based approach to cybersecurity, with Clayton Brazil sharing strategies for streamlining cybersecurity controls to align with business objectives, enhancing stakeholder engagement, and fostering a culture of cyber risk awareness.

The agenda also featured an on-stage interview with Stephen Bennett and Peter Johnsson , focusing on the welfare of cybersecurity teams and the importance of keeping them engaged to prevent burnout in their roles, emphasising the importance of an engaged workforce.

Our Keynote Panel tackled the compliance burden, examining the impact of regulations like CPS 234 and ISO27001. Led by Dr. Lisa Dethridge , the panellists Johnny Serrano , Sharon K. , Gabriela Guiu-Sorsa and Pearse Courtney discussed strategies for managing the associated costs and challenges of compliance.

Other notable topics included building effective cybersecurity programs with Fabian Llanos Lopez , real-world insights into securing critical infrastructure with Glenn Dickman , and a panel discussion focused on developing effective incident response plans, where Jack Cross , Alvin R. and Pearse Courtney emphasised the importance of clarity and good practices in compliance strategies.

Heinrich Viljoen presented ways to adopt a practical enterprise cyber threat modelling, while Shannon Jurkovic , Kat McCrabb , Andrew McMutrie , Charles McDermid and Mariya N. joined a panel and discussed successful ways to educate and engage diverse people with cybersecurity and online safety.


Ryan Nera outlined a roadmap for adopting AI in cybersecurity, focusing on a risk-based approach to controls, while Rob Wiggan provided a toolkit for new CISOs, detailing essential steps for their first 90 days, and Sadeed Tirmizey , Michael Poezyn , Alvin R. ?and Lama Tayeh ??? ???? addressed common challenges in incident management and the benefits of proactive strategies during a panel discussion.

Gaurav Vikash delivered a presentation on governing through a cyber crisis and shared strategies for boards to manage cyber crises effectively, ensuring business continuity, and Tim Eichmann concluded the conference by discussing the development of a strategic roadmap for advancing cybersecurity maturity in preparation for future challenges.

CISO Brisbane 2024 underscored the critical need for a collaborative and proactive approach to cybersecurity, emphasising the importance of culture, compliance, and continuous improvement in safeguarding organisations against evolving threats.
