QHSE Reporting - Empower Proper Reporting

QHSE Reporting - Empower Proper Reporting

Let us establish that preparing reports is not the best or most joyful part of any job. The bitter side of Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) reports is that they are mandatory, detailed and immediate. Well, blame it on ISO 9001, 14001 and equivalent standards.

In the previous article shared last week, I have mentioned 6 points to establish the foundations of reporting (QHSE) events effectively. Today I will emphasize on understanding the importance of reporting these events. After working closely with QHSE teams for a decade, I believe that what is worse than preparing a report can be:

  1. Failing to report an event: due to ignorance or underestimation of the importance of the event or its impact.
  2. A weak/misleading report: can be related to the lack of competency on the personal level or governance on the organization level.

So, what may go wrong? here are some of the consequences resulted from the above:

  • Losing control: being flexible where you should be strict may put your operations under serious risks. Reportable incidents as per the organization procedure must be reported accurately.
  • Cost: the investment made to prevent incidents occurrence will lead to remarkable cost savings on the medium and long terms. Think about it!
  • Missing an opportunity: the good side of an #incident, near miss or a discovered non-conformance is to improve your performance. Don't miss it!
  • Taking unnecessary risk: the absence or improper reporting prevents eliminating risks, unsafe conditions or acts. That may lead to catastrophic consequences.
  • Reputation: entities and clients lose #trust in firms with bad QHSE records. Would you risk it?

For sure there are other impacts which can be added to the five points mentioned above, especially the ones related to the effect of careless style of reporting on the work culture and team attitude.

Please feel free to share your experience and thoughts!
