Q&A with Tony Dimitrov, SDE II for Amazon Freight Tech

Hello all, meet Tony! Tony is a Software Development Engineer II on our Amazon Freight Tech team. Tony graduated with a degree in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota in 2019. Afterwards, he worked on a variety of teams for a competing retailer. When he hit the point of wanting to try something new, a fast-paced high tech company like Amazon felt right up his ally! Since joining Amazon 6 months ago, Tony says Amazon has met his expectations, which at the end of the day is "building cool things with smart people."

What has surprised you the most about Amazon or ATS since joining us just 6 months ago?

The most interesting thing to me has been the Customer Obsession. I have worked for a few retailers and their competition is always Amazon. Here, we're less worried about competition and more so about our customer.

What excites you MOST about your role and team at ATS?

The speed at which we are growing is crazy to see. Ever since I joined six months ago, there have been 10 new engineers that have joined Amazon Freight in Minneapolis. This growth is only predicted to intensify as well which is super exciting.

In your opinion, what is the most rewarding aspect of working in a diverse environment?

A diverse environment not only offers a diversity of opinions, but also a welcoming environment to everyone. No one likes to be the only one like them when going somewhere new and a diverse environment eases such a transition.

Tony, can you finish the sentence for us? "When I'm not at work, you can find me..."

at a Timberwolves game! I'm a massive fan and I am loving the great season we have been having.

What's the last song or podcast you listened to?

I am a BIG podcast guy. I love the Dane Moore Podcast (Timberwolves), Dunc'd On (NBA), and Pomp Podcast (Investing).

What is your favorite place in the world?

Visiting Bulgaria, it's where I was born and I go any opportunity I can get. I may be biased but it is definitely an underrated tourist destination.

What excites you most about the future?

Growing technically and as a leader. I have a lot of room to grow at ATS and I am ready to put in the work. It's great to be at a company that challenges me and gives me the opportunity to grow.

Is there someone that inspires you in your career and why?

My parents inspire me. Seeing them immigrate here and succeed is all the inspiration I will ever need in my career.
