Q&A with Shereen Khan, Finance Manager (Inland Region)

Meet Shereen Khan, our Inland Region’s Finance manager, who joined us as Stefanutti Stocks Civils Finance manager in October 2014.???

What is the best thing about your job?

“The best thing about my job is working with great people and being able to contribute to a world class Finance team. Come October I will have been here for nine years (almost a decade!) and the fact that one can still learn and grow in one’s job, is what makes coming to work each day great!”

What are your greatest achievements to date???

“Twenty years ago, I graduated with BCom Accounting degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal but did not study further as I had to move to Johannesburg to start earning an income. I then completed my articles. Two years ago, I decided I was going to complete my studies and become a Qualified Chartered Accountant?– and in March of this year that’s exactly what I did! This proves you are never too old to study or to achieve your dreams!?

“Being a mother, having a full-time job and going back to study almost twenty years later took many sacrifices, and my family supported me, most weekends sitting on the couch watching TV, whilst I studied. Then last year, after my final board exam, we went away on holiday to Turkey and Egypt. Boy oh boy, did that feel great!”

What brings you joy?

“My 12-year-old daughter, Fiza, and spending time with my family brings me great joy. I also love travelling and like construction renovation projects (home related) and interior decorating. I’m always trying to find new hobbies for my daughter and I, and like most bean counters, I do love working!”

Who do you look up to?

“Our Stefanutti Stocks CFO – Yolanda Du Plessis . She is a strong and courageous woman and a straight arrow. Her work ethic and her dedication to her family and her career is admirable.

“I also look up to my Grandmother – Mariam Shaik. We grew up in humble conditions, and she taught me how to be strong and never give up. She always knew how to ‘make a plan’ and keep everyone happy and together. She taught me that nothing is more important than family and maintaining relationships.”

What do you aspire to?

“One day I’d like to be the CFO of a listed organisation. On a personal level I’d like to get back into horse riding and teach my daughter. Oh, and traveling is also definitely on the list!”??
