Q&A with Matt Huff, Software Development Manager for Amazon Freight

Hello all! ?? Meet Matt, a Software Development Manager who has been at Amazon for 3 years and embodies our Day 1 culture by being customer-obsessed, innovating on behalf of our customers, and understanding that Success and Scale Bring Broad Responsibility.

Matt, can you tell us about more about yourself and your Amazon journey?

I've always loved tech, even as a young kid, I was always tinkering. I started out as a software engineer 14 years ago and I've worked in many different roles / companies since. When I heard Amazon was coming to Nashville, I realized that the same hunger that had driven me to always challenge myself was consistent with Amazon's Day 1 concept. I started to learn more and I was hooked! Amazon has been a wonderful place to work and I love waking up everyday feeling like it's Day 1.

How did your past experience help prepare you for working at Amazon?

I've worked for a Fortune 5 company in the past, but I believe my experiences working for small startups really prepared me. Amazon has found a unique way to mold the two experiences and I think that's one of the reasons Amazon continues to push the envelope.

What excites you MOST about your role and team at Amazon Transportation Services (ATS)?

I work with Amazon talent and we're building products and tech for an industry that's ripe for disruption. We are uniquely positioned to scale externalization of our transportation services and there's something really fulfilling about being there from the beginning.

In your opinion, what is the most rewarding aspect of working in a diverse environment?

Innovation doesn't happen in a vacuum. You need diverse perspectives to help you think differently about a problem. At Amazon, this is a first class citizen and we debate ideas heavily. This can be challenging at times, but more often than not, the result is a high quality, innovative solution.

What is your favorite ATS memory?

When I joined Amazon Freight, the pandemic was in full swing. It took well over a year before in-office operations became possible and having an opportunity to finally see many of the people I worked with, for well over a year, was a great moment.

Matt, can you finish the sentence for us? "When I'm not at work, you can find me..."

Outside with my family or heads down on a project. I love to DIY everything. My obsession with tinkering has never left me, I love taking on projects that will help me learn a new skill.

Are you involved in any community-related activities you would like to mention?

I'm part of a non-profit that seeks to uproot the negative stigma that's affiliated with lung cancer and coordinate events that both provide awareness and raise money for much-needed research. Visit our website to learn more! https://www.thehuffproject.org.

What's the last thing you watched?

The Book of Boba Fett. I'm a sucker for science fantasy / fiction.

What is your favorite place in the world?

Wherever my wife and children are! Ideally at the beach or somewhere warm.

What excites you most about the future?

The advancements that have been made in my lifetime give me hope for the future. I'm hopeful that, as a society, we make the right decisions that lead to better medical care, equality, improves the environment, and investing in technology that enriches our lives. To put it simply, I'm excited about the future we're building for my children and their children.

Is there someone that inspires you in your career and why?

My Brother to keep me honest, My Son and Daughter to remind me to be a good example, Neil deGrasse Tyson to remind me to "keep looking up", Simon Sinek to give me insights, and many of my friends and colleagues who are way smarter than I am.
