Q&A with Managing Director Claire Robinson
How did you start in the fabrication industry?
During my time at university, I had the opportunity to work for a large organisation on the night shift. As someone who grew up in London, I hadn't been exposed to much of the industrial sector before, but the job offered better financial prospects compared to working at a call centre like many of my friends. Initially, it was quite a shock, but surprisingly, I found myself enjoying the experience.
After graduating, I joined a fabricators company and started working in the accounts department. With my proactive approach and determination, I swiftly progressed to the role of production manager. I didn't hesitate to get involved in various tasks on the shop floor, including welding, which allowed me to gain valuable insights and hands-on knowledge.
Since then, my career has taken off, and I've leveraged my business background to navigate risks and overcome challenges. I've embraced ownership and used my entrepreneurial spirit to drive success.

How has the industry changed over the years?
In the early days when I started, the focus was not on visions and values like it is today. Our means of communication were primarily through fax machines and regular mail, which really shows how much technology has evolved over time (revealing my age!). However, with the advancements in technology, our machines have become incredibly accurate and efficient, enabling us to work at an impressive speed.
The changes within our industry have been numerous and extensive. It's difficult to list them all, but what stands out the most is the ever-evolving culture. At Wrekin, we have embraced a forward-thinking mindset, constantly seeking out and utilising the latest resources available worldwide to ensure the most efficient product supply. We believe in looking back to learn from our past experiences, and data analysis plays a crucial role in making informed decisions today.

What are your predictions for the future of British manufacturing???
With continued investment and support in technology and renewable energy, we can pave the way for a prosperous and exciting future. It is crucial that we actively strive for this goal. As a nation, Britain has made significant progress in building a strong foundation to compete on a global scale. However, to achieve true domination, we need unwavering commitment from the government.
By prioritising technology advancements and renewable energy initiatives, we can position ourselves as leaders in the field. This not only benefits our economy but also contributes to a sustainable and environmentally conscious future. It is imperative that we work together to secure the necessary support and resources to drive this vision forward. By doing so, we can establish a dominant position in the global arena and reap the rewards of a thriving and innovative nation.
How have you overcome the challenges of being a Managing Director in the fabrication industry?
I adopt a focused approach when pursuing my goals, concentrating on the task at hand. I view obstacles, whether they are technological or human-related, as opportunities for growth and change. It intrigues me to delve into the thought processes of individuals and explore the root causes behind different perspectives. Even if I may not always agree with or personally favour certain viewpoints, I find it intellectually stimulating and fascinating.
By embracing this mindset, I continuously learn and broaden my understanding of diverse perspectives. It allows me to navigate challenges with an open mind and find innovative solutions. I believe that by actively engaging with differing viewpoints and analysing the underlying causes, we can uncover new insights and approaches that contribute to personal and professional growth.

1 年Aside from university, this sounds very similar to my Mam’s route into fabrication. She started out as a part time secretary 39 years ago and worked her way up to owner and MD. She would totally agree that she too is fortunate to have a very talented long standing team around her.
