Q&A with Julie, Sr. Business Intelligence Manager at Marketplace Recruitment & Dev Team in Luxembourg

Hi Julie,

Can you tell us more about you and your Amazon career journey?

I started my Amazon journey back in October 2017 as a junior data analyst (L4) on the devices sales & marketing team. I had one year of prior experience under my belt, but was excited to dive into this new role. Things really started to pick up for me in April 2019 when I got promoted to L5 and became the expert for Fire TV analytics efforts for Europe. I also got a great opportunity to develop my management skills - I became the scrum master for the devices analytics team of 7 engineers, overseeing work planning and deliverables.

After 3 great years on that team, I decided it was time for a change of pace. In April 2020, I transitioned into a Business Intelligence Engineer role with the Prime tech team, with another engineer reporting to me. We got to build the entire data pipeline to help implement the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) payments regulation for Amazon Prime - pretty cool stuff!

The hard work paid off, and in April 2022 I was promoted again, this time to L6. With that, I decided to try my hand at a management role, moving over to Fulfillment-by-Amazon (FBA) as a Business Intelligence Manager. Now I get to lead a team of 5, covering all analytics aspects of the FBA supply chain.

Can you tell us more about your current job?

In my role as a Business Intelligence Manager for Fulfillment-by-Amazon (FBA), I get to work with an amazing team to ensure the FBA supply chain runs as smoothly as possible for our sellers and customers. It's a diverse set of responsibilities - one day we might be building complex data pipelines to simplify self-service reporting for our stakeholders, the next we could be doing deep dives to uncover root causes or emerging trends in the data. And of course, we're always working on intuitive dashboards that allow our partners to quickly uncover powerful insights.

No two days are ever the same, and that's what keeps the work so engaging. Knowing that the analyses and tools we develop have a direct impact on business decision-making, as well as the overall experience for sellers and customers, is incredibly rewarding.

As the manager, my role is to help guide the team, keeping them focused on the right priorities and unblocking any challenges they face. I also get to set the strategic vision for our projects and initiatives. But I still very much enjoy rolling up my sleeves and getting hands-on with the technical work too - it's the best of both worlds!

What is your proudest moment at Amazon so far?

I'm really proud that I was able to build the entire data product from the ground up for the new Prime payments workflow for MFA. It was a big undertaking - I had to collaborate closely with the software engineering team to figure out how to collect the data, design the data model, and work with the product managers to create the right performance metrics. This was a first-of-its-kind project for Amazon, focused specifically on the European market, so it was quite a journey! But three years later, all the designs I put in place are still being used, which is really gratifying and makes me even prouder of the work I was able to accomplish.

What do you like about working at Amazon?

The two things that really stand out for me about working at Amazon are the ability to take on diverse challenges, and the driven, collaborative culture.

I love how I've had the opportunity to change teams and dive into completely new areas - from marketing for the devices business, to payments and tech systems for Prime, and now the supply chain for FBA. It's almost like getting to work at different companies, but with the support and resources of a single organization.

The other aspect that inspires me is the caliber of people I get to work with. Everyone is so driven and focused on achieving results, yet there's also a strong sense of collaboration. Things just get done efficiently and effectively.

Did you go through any major life events while working at Amazon?

In November 2023, I embarked on a new journey - motherhood! I took advantage of Luxembourg's generous parental leave benefits and took 11 months off to care for my baby. Throughout this time, my manager was incredibly supportive, helping me plan the leave and my return. When I came back in early August, it felt like I never left. The team welcomed me with open arms, making it easy to jump right back in. It's been so rewarding to balance this precious family time with continuing to grow my career at Amazon.

What is your favorite leadership principle?

Ownership. The idea that everyone is entitled to own their projects end to end, and are encouraged to take them to the next level gives a lot of freedom to innovate.

What is your superpower?

I love to optimize my team’s mechanisms and make it easier for them to deliver results and innovate.

What’s your favorite Amazon product or service?

I enjoy Goodreads to keep track of what I’m reading and motivating me to read more!

What do you do outside of work?

I am one of the leaders of an NGO in Luxembourg called “WeSTEM” (Women Excel in STEM). I’m helping organizing big events and certified programs for women to upskill and boost their careers across Luxembourg. I also enjoy creating fun activities for my son, with lots of sensory inputs.

A great example of how broad a role can be, I can relate to: "one day we might be building complex data pipelines ... the next we could be doing deep dives"
