Q&A: Jade

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in interior design?

A: In year 10, during secondary school, I completed two weeks of work experience. The first week was with a Nottingham-based interior design studio, and I absolutely loved it! This experience became the foundation of my dream to pursue a career in interior design. Now, almost 20 years later, I am grateful every day to work in a role I love.

Q: How do you prioritise functionality versus aesthetics in a space?

A: Functionality is consistently my top priority. Our focus is on creating interior spaces that meet the needs and preferences of the users. Designing visually stunning interiors is meaningless if it doesn't enhance the user's daily experience and convenience.

Q: How do you keep up with the latest design trends?

A: While I draw inspiration from websites like Pinterest, I don't strictly follow trends. Creating timeless spaces that clients will love for years is more sustainable than chasing short-lived trends.

Q: What's your approach to selecting a colour palette for a room?

A: Factors like room use, natural light, and client preferences guide my colour palette choices. I draw inspiration from nature, ensuring the palette complements the space and its intended purpose.

Q: How do you handle disagreements with clients regarding design choices?

A: Building a good relationship is key. Regular meetings and thorough discussions help prevent disagreements. Collaboration ensures the client's vision is realized with professional recommendations.

Q: Are there any specific cultures or regions that influence your design approach?

A: Nature, particularly in Spring and Autumn, is my main inspiration. I find unique colour palettes and textures during walks with my dog.

Q: How do you see the future of interior design evolving, especially with the rise of smart homes and technology?

A: Interior design, fundamentally about how a space feels, will always be influenced by human experiences. Understanding clients' lifestyles and feelings within their spaces shapes the design.

Q: What's your approach to lighting in a room, and how do you think it affects the overall ambiance?

A: Layering lighting and using dimmers create the desired ambiance. Different tasks may require varying light levels, and having options allows flexibility.

Q: How do you handle staying within a client's budget while delivering a top-notch design?

A: Working with different budgets is exciting and challenging. Creating gorgeous interiors doesn't always require a huge budget, and functionality often trumps extravagant spending.

Q: What's the quirkiest piece of furniture you secretly wish you had in your own home?

A: I've always been drawn to statement built-in joinery units, like a bold cactus green shelving unit making a visual impact.

Q: Imagine the most bizarre client request ever. What's the funniest feature they've asked to be added to a building?

A: I’ve been asked to include an en-suite shower big enough for two adults. It brings home the point that interior design is deeply personal.

Q: Can you recommend a favourite hidden gem in your city or town that you love to visit on a day off?

A: Bear coffee shop in Nottingham opens on 16th November, and I'm excited for it to become my new favourite spot. If not there, you'll find me in Blidworth woods with my dog, Cooper.

Q: Are there any books, movies, or TV shows you've recently enjoyed that aren't related to design?

A: "Shrinking" on Apple TV is a recent favourite. I've also been captivated by French and Scandinavian films like 'Close' and 'Comedy Queen'.

Q: How do you unwind and disconnect from a busy week of designing?

A: Walking with Cooper allows me to completely switch off and find inspiration in nature. Spending time with family, especially as a new aunt, is also a cherished way to unwind.
