Q&A with I-MED Radiologist, Dr Yen Yung Chieng.

Dr Yen Yung C. is an Interventional Radiologist & Clinic Director at I-MED Radiology Casey in Melbourne.??

What drew you to a career in radiology, and how do you find fulfillment in your work????

Initially, I wanted to become a plastic surgeon, and diagnostic radiology wasn't something I considered. However, after spending time referring patients for imaging, I discovered a keen interest in procedural radiology. That was when I realised there was something intriguing in this field.?

What subspecialties within radiology are you particularly passionate about, and why????

I am particularly passionate about performing theatre procedures. My previous experience has equipped me with the ability to remain calm and focused in such settings.?

Are there any hobbies or activities outside of work that you believe contribute to your success as a radiologist????

Give me a problem, and I'll find a solution! I'm currently working on a robot designed to enhance measurement accuracy. Trials have shown 100% accuracy, and I've patented the technology in New Zealand, America, and Europe.?

Are there specific advancements or innovations in radiology that you're eager to be a part of or contribute to in the coming years????

The College of Radiology is currently seeking sub-specialty recognition for neuroradiology and interventional radiology. Once we achieve this status, I envision radiology evolving into a surgical sub-specialty. This would allow us to manage patients both pre- and post-surgery and admit them under our care. Interventional radiology would no longer be seen just as a specialty for performing procedures but as a more comprehensive service.?

If you weren’t a radiologist, what would you be?????

I'd be a chef. I love baking!?

What advice would you give to medical students or young professionals interested in pursuing a career in radiology? ?

AI and computer-assisted technologies is not taking over. They're more about advancing imaging and precision. My advice is to stay adaptable to future technologies and maintain an open mind.?

What's the most surprising or unexpected thing you've learned through your work in radiology? ?

I didn't initially choose radiology, but the more I explored it, the more I fell in love with it. For me, the satisfaction comes from helping patients. My knowledge and ability to help others keep me motivated.?
