Q&A with Graduate Student Binay Nayak

1.????Where is your hometown?

Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, India

2.????What inspired you to pursue your area of study?

In my undergraduate studies, I delved into the exciting world of biomaterials and drug delivery. However, my passion for exploring novel areas led me to venture into the realm of synthesizing nanostructures, particularly nanodiamonds and quantum dots. This change of direction ignited a spark within me, and I thoroughly enjoyed working in this fascinating field. I became so enamored with this line of research that I decided to pursue it further in my graduate studies.

3.????Where did you receive your previous degrees?

I received my Bachelor’s in Technology, Biotechnology from the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, India

4.????Why did you choose Iowa State?

As I was looking into potential graduate programs, a friend of mine recommended Iowa State University (ISU). Intrigued, I started to research the Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) department and was immediately captivated by the fascinating work being done by the faculty members. My interest was further piqued when two of my close friends also expressed interest in applying to the program.

As fate would have it, I was the only one who received an offer of admission from ISU. While I was disappointed that my friends wouldn't be joining me on this journey, I was excited about the opportunity to pursue my graduate studies at such a renowned institution.

5.????Please describe current lab work

Currently, my research focus revolves around the assembly of metalized nanostructures in both two and three dimensions. By combining these individual nanostructures, I am working towards creating complex and unique metamaterials. These metamaterials are incredibly versatile and have various applications, particularly in the fields of optics and photonics.

6.????What is your favorite part about the research?

One of the most enjoyable aspects of my research is the opportunity to conduct experiments at various national labs. Specifically, I love working with synchrotron-based x-rays, which we use to conduct our experiments. As part of our research, my colleagues and I often travel to different national labs across the country to utilize their advanced facilities and equipment. Not only do I enjoy working with synchrotron x-rays, but I also relish the opportunity to travel and explore new places, more importantly, food.

7.????If your research was like a game or a sport, what would it be and why?

The goal of my project is to gain a deeper understanding of the structure of a material, which has the potential to enable the cloaking of any object. This exciting prospect can be likened to a game where the objective is to create and build your own kingdom. Once the structure of the material has been fully understood, it can essentially cloak any object, giving the individual control and dominance over their surroundings, much like a king ruling over their kingdom.

8.????What are your hobbies?

I love to cook when I get time, apart from this I watch cricket and soccer matches.

9.????What are your career plans following your degree?

While I have yet to make any specific plans for the near future, my ultimate goal is to establish a successful career in research, with a particular focus on material science. I am passionate about exploring the potential of materials and their properties. As I continue gaining experience and expertise in my field, I am also considering pursuing a faculty position.
