Q&A with Finance Intern, Aron Abraham

This week, we caught up with @aronabraham, a finance intern with Dyfed-Powys Police.

Aron has been working in the Finance department since September 2023, after deciding to take on an internship to gain industry experience.

He has already completed two years at Swansea University on the BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance course and plans to return next September to complete his final year before graduating ??.

Working in the busy Finance department, we wanted to hear about what he’s been getting up to so far on the placement, and his future plans.?

? What drew you to an internship with Dyfed-Powys Police, how did you find out about the role??

I didn’t apply to many placements as I saw all my friends getting rejected after applying to countless positions daily - which kind of put me off. But, near the end of the deadline my university contacted me about a position as a finance intern for the police.??

Since police headquarters is relatively close to me, and is a reputable organisation to gain experience, I went through with the application process – and was offered the internship! ?

? What did your university lecturers and fellow students think about you joining Dyfed-Powys Police??

Everyone was pleased, knowing it was a reliable and knowledgeable place to work.?

Due to the difficulty in securing a placement, and its competitive nature, I was lucky to be accepted.?

My lecturers highlighted how it’s a chance to apply textbook finance to real-world scenarios.?

My friends were excited for me and pointed out how it would be a unique viewpoint, as they are in private sector positions.

? Have you gained any new skills during your time with us?

My time with the team has been a fantastic learning experience!??

Working in a private sector you deal with mostly profit/loss, interest, tax matters, whereas this position touches upon those areas but focuses more on budgeting, which was something we didn’t really explore at uni.?

Participating in team meetings has showed me how you communicate in a work environment and observing the team dynamic made me realise how everyone had good chemistry and were extremely kind.?

I am improving my communication and collaboration abilities. Also, the exposure to virements (the process of transferring items from one financial account to another) has enhanced my adaptability and problem-solving skills.?

Journaling and balance sheet recs has refined my attention to detail and documentation proficiency – also showing a connection with uni, where areas overlapped.?

I started using new software’s and improved my efficiency in Microsoft Excel - all these new skills will help with my future jobs for sure.?

? What’s your career aspirations after you graduate, and do you think the internship will help you on your journey to career success??

My primary goal post-uni is to dive headfirst into the finance world, no fancy detours. I’m all about securing a solid finance job.?

As for the internship, absolutely! It’s like a sneak peek into the real deal. Learning the ropes in a police finance setting adds this unique flavour to my experience. It’s not just about the numbers; it’s about navigating the unexpected twists that come with law enforcement finances. So yeah, definitely a boost on my journey to a career success!?

? What’s your advice to other people thinking about an internship with us, would you recommend the experience??

Absolutely, I’d say go for it! If you’re into finance and want to taste of something unique, this internship is gold. You get to play with numbers in a whole different ballpark, use topics you have learnt in previous modules, plus the mix of law enforcement adds that extra kick.?

It’s a chance to flex your skills in a setting that’s not your typical office. The team is not just skilled but also incredibly kind, supportive and teach you a lot.?

What’s great is that they offer flexibility, allowing me to work from home when needed. So, if you’re up for a bit of adventure in your finance journey, this internship is a solid bet.?
