Tell us a little about yourself and how/when you got into the banking/FinTech space.

In 2015, I started a podcast series interviewing Australian startups and emerging technology companies whilst in my day job as a stockbroker focusing on Australian Equities. I thank Steve Baxter for the opportunity to be my first interviewee! In 2020 I refined my focus and purpose to immerse myself in fintech. I wanted to learn and learn as much as possible about a sector I felt (and still feel) would evolve naturally for decades to come.

In 2020 I launched a fintech-focused podcast, and in 2022, I left my previous role to form a new company called Sub11. Sub11 is a joint venture between myself and Euphemia (Family office of Dom Pym) to use content as the catalyst to help fintech founders get more customers, talent, and potentially (down the track) investment.

You recently made a move to focus entirely on online content, right? Can you tell me more about this??

Yep! After 7 years of doing content “part-time,” it was time to take the role full-time as I have seen how content can change someone’s life and the impact it can make.?A basic example in the past has been friends who have seen some posts or listened to some podcasts and ended up working at the business involved and becoming senior leaders.

So Sub11 is three months old. We’ve just launched our website www.sub11.com.au (3 weeks old), our podcast, our newsletter, and doing frequent short-form content on Australian fintechs and loving every minute of it! Our website has had about 15,000 organic visits since its launch on August 1.

How do we make money? It’s the question most asked. We have some ideas so we don’t compromise the integrity of the content, which we are launching soon. Watch this space ??.

Which FinTech/digital banking trends to watch out for in the next 6-18 months????

Good Question – I believe the access and democratisation of a number of sectors will allow innovation to shine – for instance - I believe the PFM market, particularly locally, is wide open for grabs post one of the market leaders shutting down. Micro investing is also very interesting, particularly with themes that are consumer-driven ie, aligning with your values.

One other trend to look out for will be open banking use cases and blockchain applications.

Are there any other thought leaders in FinTech you follow and others should follow as well?

Apart from you, Marcel – I enjoy chatting to Max Kausman from Tidal Ventures and reading Rex Salisbury's posts from Cambrian.

I also keep one eye on Coatue as I’m always interested in what they are up to.

In May 2022, Chris started as a Director of Sub11. Sub11 is a company focusing on using content as a mechanism to build networks, relationships, and outcomes for members of the Australian startup community.
