Q&A with Accounts Clerk Renee Okkers

Today, she’s proud to serve as an accounts clerk while pursuing a BCOM degree in financial accounting. Her growth story highlights the invaluable support that she received from her team and the role this played in her achieving her career development goals.

We caught up with Renee to find out more about what a typical day as an accounts clerk in the fintech industry entails:

What did you study before starting your career?

I completed a higher certificate in bookkeeping and am now pursuing a BCom in Accounting Sciences in Financial Accounting.

How has Wonga supported your professional growth and development?

Wonga created an opportunity for me to grow in my role, with continued support along the way. I had previously worked as a receptionist before embarking on a career in finance, but my team had faith in my abilities and encouraged me to further my education.

In your opinion, what are the key qualities or skills required to excel in your specific role?

You should have good knowledge of accounting principles, good communication skills, attention to detail, and be willing to be a team player, among other things.

How do you collaborate with other departments within Wonga?

I always have conversations with colleagues about things that need to be sorted out, and I am always assisting where I can, in person and on an MS Teams call.

How do you maintain good relationships with your suppliers?

I keep good relationships with my suppliers by paying them on time and resolving any issues that arise.

How do you manage your stress levels?

I read or listen to music to manage my stress levels.

If you were to describe your nine years spent at Wonga with one word, what would it be?

Flexible.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to become an accounts clerk, particularly within the fintech sector?

My advice to someone interested in becoming an accounts clerk, particularly in the fintech sector, is to be tech-savvy, organised, and detail-oriented. Be willing to adapt to change since the fintech industry is constantly changing and improving, and you must be able to adapt with the changes.
