7. Challenges of Veterinarians and Solutions

??????? The occupational health safety problems and mental health issues of the veterinarians are a global health concern affecting their well-being and career sustainability. Factors such as heavy workloads, emotional demands, financial stress and the ethical strain of euthanasia have been proposed as contributing factors which results in increased rates on burnout, compassion fatigue, depression and suicide risk in veterinarians.

?Veterinarians are more susceptible to occupational physical hazards such as zoonotic disease exposure and musculoskeletal injuries that can compromise overall health. veterinarians are statistically even more likely to have mental health disorders than the normal population, and a high proportion of them report symptoms related to many mental health issues such as anxiety, depression or work-stress. Regardless, the high-intensity nature of the work and lack of supportive structures can lead to burnout and compassion fatigue in veterinarians, both of which are associated with less care provision and decreased personal well-being.

Solutions such as mental health support programs, peer networks, flexible scheduling and financial assistance will help to reduce stressors. Strategies found to support the work environment and mental health include interventions such as ergonomic training, implementation of mental health education in Veterinary colleges and promotion of work-life flexibility. Moreover, structural modifications such as creating programs promoting wellness and suicide reduction are vital to make an improvement.

Organizational, educational and policy-level interventions are essential for maintaining the health and career of those in veterinary practice.
