PwC Proud Every Day

PwC Proud Every Day

For me, Pride Month has always been a time of reflection.  A time to take in the incredible culture we have created at PwC and the advocates who visibly support inclusion. A time to celebrate our strong presence in the community - from individual volunteerism to team participation in events like a recent 7-day bike ride to raise money and awareness for those with HIV/AIDS.  And, a time to examine what I can do better, both as a leader in the firm and board member at a number of nonprofit organizations focused on supporting the LGBT community.

Sadly, we were also reminded this month that it’s still possible to  wake up to horrible events like the mass shooting at a gay night club in Orlando, which killed 49 people.

These moments remind us of the role we each play individually and as companies in promoting equality in communities across the country. I want to be part of that impact both personally and professionally – part of creating a culture where people are treated fairly, have the opportunity to succeed and can bring every dimension of their whole self to work.

It’s for this reason that I’m incredibly honored to assume my new role as PwC US’ Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer on July 1. In my 25+ years with the firm I have witnessed firsthand a commitment to diversity, and an understanding that it helps us better serve our clients, while also attracting and retaining diverse talent.

For other LGBT professionals like me, I want to continue to create an environment where they feel comfortable and confident about proudly being out - being themselves. Whether that’s working with PwC’s LGBT Partner Advisory Board (the first of its kind in any of the Big Four and comprised of gay PwC professionals from around the country) to advise the firm on planning and implementation of LGBT initiatives; or participating in our OPEN (Out Professional Employee Network) Circles and LGBT Summit for mentoring, networking and development opportunities.

But my pride doesn’t end there.

I recognize that my role is about advancing diversity and inclusion for all our people, and showing gratitude to those that are helping us on this journey. From tackling unconscious bias to leading global conversations on women and leadership. From supporting working parents, diverse professionals and veterans, to bringing together thought leaders to explore disability inclusion in the workplace. None of this occurs without the support of committed, visible advocates.

I firmly believe that we have the ability to continue to bring about change. I hope that my contributions will not only create value for our firm and our communities, but help our people understand that we are proud of them every day.
