P&W-Powered ATR 42-600S Officially Launched at ERA General Assembly
We are excited to hear news from ATR at the ERA show that it received board approval for the launch of the Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) 42-600S. Powered by our PW127 engines, the new aircraft can take off and land on runways as short as 800 meters. It will be the only regional aircraft in the world able to operate on such short runways.
P&W is pleased to work with ATR to modify the software on the PW127’s engine power settings needed to allow the aircraft to take off and land on such short runways. With this software, pilots flying the ATR 42-600S will be able to use the engine’s regular power levels for normal-length runways or access the extra power capability on shorter runways. This feature ensures that the engines and the aircraft are operated in the most efficient way possible.
We are proud that the PW127 engine, part of our regional turboprop engine family, is powering this STOL aircraft that will open up numerous new city pairs throughout the world. In making the announcement, ATR said it forecasts the 42-600S will expand the addressable market by 25 per cent. At P&W, we see regional aviation as having the power to connect people and communities in the most economical and sustainable way. This new aircraft will certainly grow those connections.
Our turboprop regional engines power the 30 to 90 passenger aircraft operating today. These engines emit less CO2 emissions and consume 25 to 40 per cent less fuel on short-range flights than similar-sized regional jets for missions up to 400 nautical miles. Our engines offer airlines the best life-cycle costs and help maintain the value of the aircraft.
For these reasons, airlines that select aircraft powered by our regional turboprop engines are actually investing in a more sustainable future. For more information on how we’re transforming our products to make them the best engines for the world, visit our website.
ATR says it expects the 42-600S will be certified in the second half of 2022, with the first delivery expected immediately thereafter.
