Puzzled with your claim? Try a Different Lens

When I started providing CE Courses and content, the first group of presentations were my "Life of a Claims" series. I'd walk through various types of claims based on different perils. Ahead of the presentation, I'd always put together a flow chart that included any party that I could think of who might be involved.

As an example, for "The Life of a Fire

Claim" I would show how each party would and could affect the path of the

claim. Here’s an abbreviated list to get the point across:

·????????Policyholder

·????????Adjuster

·????????Agent

·????????Fire Marshall

·????????SIU investigator

·????????EMS contractor

·????????Public Adjuster

·????????Fire investigator

·????????Attorneys

I presented with defense and plaintiff attorneys, public adjusters, contractors, fire investigators, etc. with the intent of having the audience consider perspectives they might not have otherwise.

Fast forward to a more recent presentation I authored with the help of Steven Romero, CPCU AIC ARM SEGA . A lot of what we’re attempting to do in this presentation is to break down some of the systemic barriers between Claims, Underwriting, SIU, Producers, Attorneys, etc. The point is for each to consider more than the lens they typically apply.

We’re looking to remove the cloudy and gray by applying multiple lenses to help clear things up:

If you’ve ever put together puzzles with more than a thousand pieces, you probably used different methods as you progress. What are some of the ways you have sorted pieces when working through completing a puzzle? What creative and critical thinking have you used outside of the box as you work through complex claims??
