Putting a Twist on Turner Syndrome

Putting a Twist on Turner Syndrome

Turner Syndrome Association of Australia (TSAA) provide information, support, and opportunities to connect females living with Turner Syndrome and their support networks.

Turner syndrome, a condition that affects only females, results when one of the X chromosomes (sex chromosomes) is missing or partially missing. Turner syndrome can cause a variety of medical and developmental problems, including short height, failure of the ovaries to develop and heart defects.

As a part of our 2020 Community Grants program, TSAA received a grant to go towards a specialised Youth Camp. The grant sponsored 20 girls to attend the overnight camp, step outside their comfort zone, receive specialist information and build new relationships.

The Camp focused on Mental Health and provided information sessions for Turner Syndrome girls and ladies on mental health issues.

The Turner Syndrome Support group was started in 1983 by Glenn Fisher after the birth of her second daughter Mandy, who was diagnosed with TS just after birth. In a quest to find support and information to help deal with the implications of Mandy having TS, Glenn realised that there was nothing available and the experience was very isolating. The first meeting was held in Glenn and Geoff's home, and from there became a support group in New South Wales, eventually growing to become Australia-wide as it is today.

If you know of a Brisbane based community group on the northside who is seeking funding for a project they are working towards, please ensure to sign up to our 2022 Community Grants EOI list so we can contact you when applications open.
