Putting a "Ding in the Universe"? ...

Putting a "Ding in the Universe" ...

This reflection is triggered by some very exciting and wonderful news I received this weekend – news that was joyful, uplifting, inspiring and – perhaps needless to say – a most welcome shining light through the haze of uncertainty, caution and trepidation that has clouded most of 2020.

This weekend, my son was advised that he is a recipient of the 2021 Rhodes Scholarship. To him I say “Well done, young man, very well done!” (and I openly admit to a conscious bias here as a proud father!)

He is a very deserving recipient and as I watch his academic and career trajectory unfold, I can’t help but be reminded of Steve Jobs’ quest to put a ding in the universe. Putting a ding in the universe – making a mark, causing a shift or significant change to the shape and way of being currently known, opening up new horizons and vistas within which to help influence, impact and create a better world. He, and all the other recipients are well on their way! They have worked hard, persisted and contributed so much already and undoubtedly there will be so much more to come from these admirable young people.

Yet, amidst all of the excitement and celebration of my son receiving this prestigious honour, I am truly grateful and humbled to see him recognize all of the special and selfless people (and there are many!) who have been in orbit with him on this journey. Each, in their own way, supported him, nurtured him, mentored him, challenged him, and most of all cared for and loved him. Their guidance and commitment was undoubtedly and immeasurably instrumental in helping bring this dream of his to fruition. They are all part of his universe. They are his community.

The power of community (grounded in and arising from our “common humanity”) is such a blessing. Especially in these trying times, connecting with each other (virtually and safely), showing kindness and compassion, sharing our gifts and talents as we are able … these are the ways we can all rise up and be part of the energy that opens up the universe of others. In so doing, we are also expanding our own “ding”!

I am glad to be part of this type of community for many of my colleagues and friends. I am truly hopeful and in awe of the potential I see in so many of the young people I work with. As we are able, let’s all keep paying it forward – oh what a ding that will create!

Today I celebrate my son and his accomplishments and sum it up with words of wisdom from Dr. Seuss ..

“Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You're off to Great Places!
You're off and away!”

Mike, this is a milestone achievement. Well deserved and the 'ding' will get bigger with Christian's future work to yet to be realized. Equally important is the wonderful person he is and that is certainly based on much of your's and Audrey's influence. Congrats to all.
