Putting Church Debt to Work for Your Congregation

Putting Church Debt to Work for Your Congregation

It’s no secret that the American psyche shifted after 2008, leading many to become debt-averse.? When the housing market crashed, the illusion of living beyond your means was exposed.??

But is it always the wrong decision to take on debt?? Could it ever be wise???

While the Bible does not explicitly call debt a sin, it’s not necessarily a fan either.??

Congregations considering taking on church debt need to apply wisdom to their decision-making.??

A congregation can be handcuffed by debt.? But being debt-free isn’t necessarily unquestionably good for a church.??

Churches can also be suffocated by savings.??

When debt is demonized,? it raises the question - is money being worshipped???

Healthy, forward-facing churches don’t demonize debt or sacrifice for savings.? Instead, they view money for what it is:?

A tool.? A resource.? A gift.? A means to an end.??

The primary issue churches face with debt or savings is vision.? What is it for???

There are ways churches can access debt to advance their mission, care for their community, and expand their influence.??

If your church will take on a significant project, incurring debt is a reality you must navigate.? Even with a strategic communication plan and a successful capital campaign, most churches will still need to access debt to complete significant projects.??

The question you must wrestle with is not - “Should we go into debt?”? But instead - “is this initiative worth the investment?”??

Here are a few ways your church can wisely utilize debt:?

  • Provide a meaningful solution to a critical issue
  • Maintain liquid assets
  • Secure a fair interest rate
  • And more!?

Bad church debt includes:

  • High-interest rate credit cards?
  • Variable-interest short-term loans
  • Initiatives that don’t have congregational buy-in

Taking on debt, initiating a capital campaign, accessing your savings – all of these are personal and nuanced decisions.? There is no one right way to step into the future God may be calling you to.?

We all need a guide.? We’re here for you.??

From your initial dreams to your project’s completion, we can walk alongside you every step of the way.? We have the expertise you need to see your vision become reality.?

Don’t delay.? The earlier you have us on your side, the greater access you’ll have to our extensive network of contractors, lenders, and more.?

I appreciate the thoughts of this post. I would just add one additional thought. When you are trying to evaluate the impact on ministry…may sure you have a clear “Why” that can be easily communicated and can become the focal point of the effort. Too often we build because we think we need more room. The question is why…what will the new facility to do that you currently are not doing? How will it allow you to share the gospel with more people?
