Putting the brakes on AI access
Last week, international law firm Hill Dickinson put the brakes on general access to AI tools after noticing a surge in usage among its staff.?
According to the BBC, much of this activity didn’t align with the firm’s AI policy. An email to employees of Hill Dickinson said that they have ”noticed a significant increase in usage of, and uploading of files to, such tools."?
Employees now need to go through an approval process to use these tools.
But what does this say about our growing dependence on AI and the concerns that come with it?
We've seen similar patterns before, especially in industries like shipping, where new technology is often met with hesitation. Whether it's fear of job displacement or a lack of trust in AI's capabilities, many prefer to stick with what they know.?
The challenge isn’t whether we should use AI or not. It can be enormously helpful in assisting with repetitive tasks or helping young workers “cram five years' experience into 30 seconds of prompt engineering," according to Simon Haighton-Williams, CEO of The Adaptavist Group, a UK-based software services group.?
But we need to strike the right balance. AI should enhance human thinking, not replace it. We don’t want to become so reliant on it that we forget how to think for ourselves.
People should be encouraged to explore new tools but to do so with caution, especially when it comes to sensitive and confidential data.?

Free report: From Data to Action: Unlocking the Value of HFD to Enhance Safety and Achieve Ship Performance Goals
For decades, noon reports, a once-daily snapshot of a vessel’s performance, have been the cornerstone of voyage tracking and optimisation. These reports have provided valuable insights into key metrics such as fuel consumption, speed, and weather conditions. However, their limitations are becoming increasingly evident in today’s fast-paced, efficiency-driven environment. With the advent of high-frequency data (HFD) systems, the industry is poised to undergo a transformative shift.?
Our latest report, commissioned by Danelec, explores the shift from traditional low-frequency data (LFD) methods to high-frequency data systems, analysing their role in transforming maritime operations. By examining the current industry trends, the role of data today and the challenges and opportunities of HFD. The report provides actionable insights into building a data-driven future for the industry.

Hundreds of decisions are made every day regarding the performance of a ship. Yet, many of these decisions rely on outdated information. In an age dominated by instant communication, should one of the world’s most critical modes of transport rely solely on manually inputted and potentially outdated information?
