PUTTING BEAUFORT STREET BACK ON THE MAP.

The Beaufort Street strip has been very quiet the last couple of years, and we've had to say some sad goodbyes to some Mount Lawley icons. 

However, it has been exciting to see a surge of new developments in the past six months, with millions of investment dollars injected into the strip. 

The most recent project being the proposed $5M development of the old Empire site. This multi-storey venue features five bars, four rooftop decks and a restaurant. If passed by council, they hope to be serving food and drinks by the end of the year.

Other major developments include construction of the luxury six-storey apartments called Challis at the old Highgate Dry Cleaners site. The boutique development already looks iconic with its curved walls and curved windows. The jewel of the development being a whole floor penthouse with its own rooftop pool.

The much loved Flying Scotsman is also undergoing a major refurbishment with new owners, the Three Pound Group (The Stables, The Revely, The Camfield). Set to open later this year, the venue will be renamed The Elford Hotel, named after George Elford, who owned the 1909 Wine Saloon on Beaufort Street.

Mount Lawley residents are now enjoying the recently completed renovations and extension to the Alexander buildings and shops. The new shopping arcade now hosts newcomer Soho Lane with the addition providing much-needed state of the art offices to the strip.

Also worth mentioning is the Woolworths Shopping Centre's construction next to the Caltex on the corner of Bulwer and Beaufort Street. This is the first time a national supermarket has entered into Mount Lawley which has been serviced by locals such as Fresh Provisions and the recently refreshed Market Place IGA. 

It's great to see that these major businesses have confidence in the Mount Lawley area. The new variety of retailers will attract even more small businesses, which will contribute to restoring the Beaufort strip to its former glory.

Not long ago (2014), the Beaufort Street Festival attracted over 150,000 people, making it one of Perth's largest street festivals. The event itself and local businesses attracted national and worldwide coverage - which was fantastic branding for Mount Lawley. I feel this kind of promotion will put Mount Lawley back on the map once and for all, and I hope to see this included in our future. 

This activity will no doubt increase the suburb's popularity and boost a renewed desire to live in the area – which will ultimately have a positive impact on real estate values. 

Situated less than 2kms from the Perth CBD, this idyllic inner-city suburb has leafy green streets lined with white picket fences, beautiful character homes and coffee shops on nearly every corner. The leafy suburb is surrounded by parklands such as Hyde Park and Hamer Park, has its own private golf course that is nearly half the suburb's size, and even has its own stretch of the river. What's not to love about living here?

House prices in Mount Lawley have steadily been increasing - experiencing an 8.6% annual increase in median values. In January 2021, the median price rose to $1.08M, the highest since June 2016.  

I am personally extremely optimistic of what the future holds for the Mount Lawley lifestyle and property market. And as a proud Mount Lawley resident myself, I cannot wait to welcome the new bars, eateries and boutiques that will be joining our special community very soon.
