Put money into primary education to support reading needs ... and save a packet later on!

A message to reach the stars from Julia Clouter.

The primary phase is the most efficient time to identify difficulties and close the learning gap as it emerges. This is because it decreases the need for more intensive and expensive remediation at later learning phases.

Attempts to close the reading gap at the secondary phase are met with significant resistance because the academic gap has widened to a chasm and has become landscaped with the challenge of managing perceived failure.

The learning journey at secondary school is punctuated by concerns about peer reactions, social standing, differences and identity. Between 12 and 16, tackling personal reading improvement is not a high priority for individuals with reading difficulties. Going under the radar, however, is.

Providing support at the primary phase is crucial, and providing the resources to enable this challenge to be met is essential.

Why do we just seem to be flicking rubber bands at the moon?

Julia Clouter - please could I join you for a rant! 1000% with you on this. Lack of support early on is another non-sensical situation within our system. It doesn't matter how many new 'Reading Framework' documents are produced over the years to explain what to do, if the training, staffing and resources are not here to back it up.
