Put The Memorial Back In "Memorial Day"

Although Memorial Day had not yet been established, Abraham Lincoln’s words capture the spirit of the holiday. Unfortunately, few Americans remember the reason for Memorial Day – just 28 percent, according to a Gallup poll. In an effort to restore Americans’ understanding of this important day, the United States Congress created the National Moment of Remembrance. The moment is intended to create a national act of unity that provides a sense of history to all citizens and ensures that younger generations understand the sacrifices that have been made to preserve our liberties.

Before the big barbecue, take time this Memorial Day weekend to honor the men and women who gave their lives fighting for our country. If you’re looking for a way to remember those brave Americans, here are a few suggestions:

? Raise your American flags
? Attend a Memorial Day parade
? Visit a battlefield
? Go to a memorial service organized by a veterans group
? Observe the National Moment of Remembrance (3:00 p.m. on Memorial Day)
? Share photos and memories of your friends and family members who have fallen in battle
