Ever Got Your Goals Interrupted? I Did!
With summer in the rearview and the holidays fast approaching, you are more than likely reviewing the goals you set at the beginning of the year. You may have started off with small goals to test the waters or very lofty goals that seemed almost impossible to attain, but something inside you said aim high, you can do this.
Like you, I’ve had some goals for this year. My physical goal for the last quarter of 2017, is to train and run the Spartan Beast at the end of October. The Beast is a 13-15-mile race over harsh terrain, with about 36 military style obstacles thrown in for fun, torture and a test of your mental and physical stamina.
Over the last few months, I committed to preparing myself, physically and emotionally. I stepped up my focus on nutrition, reconfigured by sleep routine and increased my workout regimen. In addition to 5:30 am daily Bootcamp, long hikes and runs along a rugged hike and bike trail became part of my workout routine. The race was getting closer; I was getting stronger, more agile and more mentally prepared.
Then, without warning, on one of my best runs, on a day when I felt most prepared for the race, a small piece of root (more like a twig) got in my way, and I tripped and fell on sharp, jagged rocks. I could see it happening, and the most I could do as I came crashing down, was to use my arms to help break my fall. I landed like a ton of bricks, and I saw and felt my right leg twist across my body in sort of a pretzel-type formation. The pain was immediate and intense and I knew at that moment, my goal to run the Beast in a couple of weeks was now out of reach. Thankfully, X-rays revealed no broken bones. Physiotherapy has proved to be both painful and helpful. I’m off crutches and back in the gym. Halted by a twig. Go figure!
My physical goal is still to run the Spartan race. Just not now. In the meantime, I will overcome this obstacle. I will rehab, train, train some more, and get even stronger and more prepared for the next race. Even with my knee on ice and leg elevated, I can see myself jumping over fire at the finish line. Spartan 2018, I’m coming after you!
What are your goals for this year? For this quarter? Have you met your goals, or on course to meet them? Or like me, despite your best efforts, did you get thrown off course by a twig or a boulder?
The great news is, this gives you an excellent opportunity to reassess, regroup, re-tool and move forward. You always have time to push past whatever comes at you.
I believe that everyone can overcome obstacles and excel at work and life. Helping others push through obstacles is what I do best. I would love to talk with you about pushing past, through, over, under or around whatever obstacles stand in the way of you or your team accomplishing your goals.
Reach out and lets talk about how I can help.
