Pushing Boundaries: Lessons from Running, Trekking, and Overcoming Setbacks

Pushing Boundaries: Lessons from Running, Trekking, and Overcoming Setbacks

I want to get fitter for my kid. Not just to stay healthy, but to set an example, to keep up, to be present. That’s what pushed me to challenge myself in ways I never had before—running longer, training harder, and even climbing mountains.

From Casual Running to a Half Marathon

For years, I ran casually—3-4 km at a time, no structure, no goal. It kept me active, but I wasn’t really improving. That changed at the end of 2023 when I registered for my first 10K race. Suddenly, I had a clear target.

I followed a structured plan, gradually increasing my mileage. In January 2024, I completed my first official 10K. The thrill of crossing the finish line was unforgettable. That moment fueled my next challenge: a Half Marathon.

I dedicated the next few months to proper training—learning about different types of runs, investing in strength and mobility work, and tracking my progress. By September, I had achieved a sub-30 minute 5K, and I was fully committed to running my first Half Marathon in November.

Then, life threw a curveball.

Setbacks Happen—But They Don’t Define Us

Just as I was approaching peak training, dengue fever hit me hard. I spent two weeks on IV drips, lost 3-4 kg, and felt completely drained. My half marathon goal had to be postponed.

It was frustrating. But setbacks are inevitable—in fitness, in work, in life. What matters is how we respond.

Instead of giving up, I adjusted my plans. I registered for the Islamabad Marathon in January 2025, restarted training with a 14-week plan, and slowly rebuilt my strength.

On January 26, 2025, I completed my first half marathon in 2:29. A bit slower than my 2:20 target, but considering the brutal 190m elevation gain, I couldn’t have been prouder.

Beyond Running: Conquering the Mountains

Running wasn’t my only challenge in 2024. For two years, I had wanted to try high-altitude trekking. This year, I finally attempted a 4,600m summit—Tiger Peak.

I assumed my running stamina would be enough. Boy, I was wrong.

The trek started well, but as we hit the snow-capped section, it became brutal: 40–60 degree inclines, extreme sun glare, altitude sickness and exhaustion. My heart rate shot up to 190 bpm, and dehydration set in.

At 4,000m, just 600m from the summit, I hit my limit. I had to turn back. The descent was even tougher—sliding down ice glaciers, narrowly avoiding rocks, and battling sore joints.

Would I attempt something like this again? I don’t know. But I am so glad that I took on this challenge!

Lessons from This Journey

This experience wasn’t just about fitness—it was about growth, resilience, and learning. Here are my biggest takeaways:

  • Set Clear Goals – Progress happens when you have direction.
  • Adapt to Setbacks – Plans will fail; persistence is what matters.
  • Push Beyond Comfort – Real growth happens when you challenge yourself.
  • Discipline Beats Motivation – You won’t feel motivated every day—show up anyway.
  • Invest in the Right Tools & Knowledge – Structured plans and proper guidance accelerate progress.
  • Health Fuels Performance – A stronger body means better energy, focus, and endurance—not just in fitness but in work and life.

Why I Keep Pushing

I do this for my family, for my work, for myself. I want to be an active parent—someone who doesn’t just watch from the sidelines but leads by example.

This mindset applies to every aspect of life. At work, just like in fitness, we set goals, face challenges, adapt, and push forward. Growth happens at the edge of discomfort.

2024 was about breaking limits. 2025? Time to raise the bar!
