Less than 3 weeks to go until my debut theatrical production takes place and I'm more than a little nervous...so much so that my George Clooney grey hair has become Philip Schofield white. It's only when I delve into the numbers I begin to understand why:
· Number of venues negotiated with: 7
· Number of auditions: 33
· Number of rehearsals (so far): 41
· Number of rehearsal venues: 5
· Number of casting agents: 9
· Number of recasts: 3 (for context it's a three man play!).
· Number of play reschedules: 1
· Posters printed: 1,000 A3
· Most random unforeseen event: Instagram account hacked by Russians.
· Amount of unnecessary swearing: 2,456
· Amount of necessary swearing: 4,232
· Amount of outside funding: zero
About the play:
Can a man pushed beyond measure find redemption or return to the person he once was?
Set during the height of the recession Dubliner Tom, an unemployed investment banker, reluctantly undergoes marriage counselling to prevent his wife from uncovering the truth. Push navigates the inner workings of human interaction (personal, professional and intimate) and the conflict of trying to preserve an idealised self detached from reality.
In short, it’s about a father’s desperate attempts to maintain his family’s leafy suburban lifestyle and threadbare marriage.
What makes this play interesting enough to peel me away from the comfort of my couch and the latest series of Stranger Things?
As a country ravaged by both unemployment (myself personally affected) and the banking system I think Push’s themes will resonate strongly with an Irish audience. It achieves this through a unique Irish perspective while staying clear of tired clichés or soapbox copy and paste rants.
But most importantly Push, aside from stimulating your mind and providing unrivaled entertainment, is actually the healthier option as binge watching TV can lead to mental health issues, insomnia, obesity and even lower your sperm count!!!
Save the date: Friday, November 24th @The Tivoli Theatre.
