Whatever your H1 story is, how you reflect and plan now will create your 2023 story.

Why is reflection important?

Reflection is a vital part of the neuroscience of progress. Your brain is constantly seeking feedback from the world outside and the world inside your body. It is constantly calibrating to assess if it needs to adapt in any way.?

Reflection may be something you do as part of your planning process, but most people spend too little time and place too little importance on this reflection process. We are more obsessed about how we plan going forward.

The problem is you cannot credibly plan for the future if you don't understand what got you to this point. Your future plan is based on learning from your past.?

As a salesperson or business leader, you will fall into 2 main camps:?

- Celebrating a great quarter and H1

- Despondent because you missed targets.?

I have been through both. This might surprise you, but both require you to conduct deep reflections to set yourself up for future success.?

Those who are celebrating are in the most danger.?

When you celebrate, you become arrogant. It is a very easy place to find yourself. Arrogance downregulates the humbleness you need for deep reflection and upregulates your self-belief to such an extent that you will either not plan or do very little.

How do I reflect??

You should reflect daily, weekly and monthly, but for the purpose of today, I will focus on quarterly.?

The following structure is my own reflection process that I have been using for over 10 years and has helped me achieve growth and success.?

The years when I did not grow were when I did not conduct effective reflection. I am not saying the lack of this was the causation, but it is certainly an interesting correlation.?

IMPORTANT NOTE: your reflections should never just be about your career or business. Success is not just about your professional skills and knowledge, it is about the person you become. So make sure to include reflection about your personal life. What happens there will affect your professional life and vice-versa.

What am I proud of from last quarter?

Be kind to yourself here, without being overly generous. Think of all the things that you did well. Sometimes you will identify things that seem normal to you, but they are really great things to be proud of e.g. helping your children with something.?

What have I learned about myself and my business in the last 3 months?

Write the good, the bad and the ugly. Give details. Don't just say a statement without expressing your thoughts about it.??

How have I progressed on my goals and plans?

Be honest with yourself. Whatever progress you have made, note them down and celebrate. Even if they are small! Life is a game of inches. Enough inches and you have travelled a mile.??

What must I focus on for massive growth in the next 3 months??

Pick a maximum of 3 things. We often think that the more we focus on, the better our results. But, that creates the risk that we don't focus enough energy and time on the 1 thing that will deliver the biggest progress and results.?

What are the top 3 goals and metrics for measuring success?

Pick the 3 things that will give you the most progress towards your results.

What am I declaring for the next 3 months??

Write these as self-talk statements e.g. "I declare that..."?

Declare things that you will:

- Stop doing

- Start doing

- Continue doing more.?

Don't just use this

What I have given you is a high-level reflection process that primes you to think in the right way for your future planning and strategy.?
