Watch this video: Happiness by Steve Cutts
As we watch the animated story of a rodent's relentless quest for happiness and fulfilment, we are reminded of the way so many of us live our lives; always chasing after something, never quite reaching it, and feeling empty even as we grasp for more. This sad yet true reflection highlights a reality we are all too familiar with: in our pursuit of happiness, we often seek it in the wrong places.
In this story, we see the rodent turning to alcohol, addiction, and temporary pleasures to fill the emptiness. While we may not all turn to destructive habits, many of us are caught up in the rat race, constantly running after success, money, material possessions, and fleeting experiences, all the while trying to fill a void that never seems to close. We strive for things we believe will make us happy; yet, the more we accumulate, the more we realise that the hole inside us only deepens.
This emptiness, this longing, is a reflection of a deeper truth; each one of us has a metaphorical "God-shaped hole" in our hearts. We were created with a deep need for connection, meaning, and fulfilment, yet we often try to fill this void with things that can never satisfy. The pursuit of wealth, fame, or pleasure, while not inherently bad, can never provide the lasting peace or joy we so desperately seek.
But there is a truth that this world often misses: the one thing we have never tried, the one thing that can truly fulfil the deepest desires of our heart, is a relationship with Jesus Christ.
The Gospel message, at its core, is a story of hope and reconciliation. God, in His holiness, created us to live in a relationship with Him, but our sin has distanced us from that purpose. We have all fallen short of His perfect standard, seeking happiness in ways that ultimately leave us broken. Yet, God, in His great love and mercy, sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the price for our sins. Jesus, who is fully God and fully man, came to earth to live a sinless life, die on the cross, and rise again, so that through His sacrifice, the sins of the whole world could be forgiven. His identity as the Son of God means that His sacrifice was sufficient to atone for the sins of all humanity, offering forgiveness and reconciliation to anyone who believes in Him.
It is only by placing our faith in Jesus, by repenting of our sins and turning to Him, that we can truly experience peace and joy that surpasses all understanding. The moment we invite Him into our hearts, we are no longer defined by the pursuit of empty pleasures, but by the fullness of His love and grace.
True happiness is not found in the fleeting things of this world, but in the eternal relationship we can have with our Creator. Jesus Christ offers us a joy that is unshakable, a peace that endures, and a purpose that gives our lives meaning.?

As you watch the rodent in this animation search for fulfilment, consider the truth that you, too, have been searching; not for things, but for a relationship with the One who created you. The pursuit of happiness, when it is centred on Christ, is no longer a fleeting chase, but a lasting journey toward true peace and joy.
Jesus invites you to stop running after empty things and come to Him. He promises that in Him, you will find the fulfilment your heart longs for. Will you accept His offer today?
In the pursuit of happiness, we find that only in Christ are we truly home.
