Building a diverse talent pipeline from a non-traditional talent pool has become more critical as we can no longer meet the talent needs by exclusively tapping the traditional talent pool.
So where do we start?
- Reviewing and Improving the Current Hiring processes: This could include writing better job descriptions and job ads, implementing structured interviews to reduce bias, and diversifying the hiring panels
- Graduate Programs: Developing targeted training and development programs to build skills and experiences. I personally benefited from one such program in 2011.
- Expanding the effort: Making a conscious effort to reach out to a diverse pool of candidates. This could mean speaking and considering talents from other industries with transferable skill sets and participating in job fairs and events hosted by organizations that serve underrepresented groups.
