Pursuing the Dreams: The Story of Rizwan, a Determined Indigenous Child (Orang Asli) from Pahang, Malaysia

The ambitious child and his dream

This story starts with a memorable question from Rizwan to his teacher during his primary school years:

"Teacher, how do I go to MRSM? I want to study at MRSM."

MRSM, short for Maktab Rendah Sains MARA, is a Malaysian secondary school renowned for its excellence in science and technology education. Whenever he was questioned about his school preference after completing primary education at SK Permatang Keledang, his response remained consistent: "I want to go to MRSM, teacher, please don't forget to pray for me." He articulated his goal clearly and confidently, yet humbly asked for the teacher's prayer.

Rizwan and his struggle to access education

Rizwan, also known as ‘Boy’, was a unique and determined indigenous student. Despite living hand-to-mouth with his family, he ensured to attend school every day. His house sat atop a hill, nestled in a serene yet dimly lit area. His living conditions were indescribably challenging: a house with a thatched roof, exposed wooden beams, and makeshift netting. The floor was just bare earth, without any cement or tiles, let alone colorful tiles. There were no basic amenities like water and electricity. He had to cross the river just to take a bath.

Every day at 5 AM, Rizwan embarked on his journey. He descended the hill, and when the river swelled, he braved a 100-meter wade. Following that, he and his father traveled an impressive 70 km to get to school. Witnessing a student persevere through such hardships is profoundly moving.

His father, a farmer supporting the entire family, once confided in one of his teachers:

"Teacher, my wife and I can't teach him. I can't read, and our knowledge is limited, so Teacher, please teach him. I don't want Boy to live a difficult life.? I send him to school hoping he receives a proper education and finds a better livelihood. If my wife and I are no longer around, he can help his siblings."

Rizwan’s thirst for knowledge

His enthusiasm for learning was exceptional. He thirsted for knowledge akin to a fish’s innate pull towards water. He never neglected his assignments and homework— He often sought out additional tasks, even when the teacher hadn't planned to assign any. His tenacity resulted in excelling in nearly all subjects, consistently achieving straight A's.

However, children will always be children, and Rizwan was no exception. During our encounter with him at the Dawn of Civilization (DoC) English Speaking Workshop, one of Solve Education! 's school programs, he showcased his playful and imaginative side by expressing his desire to pet a tiger. Nonetheless, his playful nature didn't overshadow his determination to enhance his English skills. He fully understood that proficiency in English was a prerequisite for succeeding in the MRSM interview, which is conducted in English.

Long story short, during the school's excellence awards ceremony, he earned almost all the prizes and awards. These included recognition for the best academic performance, perfect attendance, academic excellence, student leadership, and the head prefect award. When his name was called, applause and cheers from students filled the room. His parents and teachers beamed with pride. His eloquent speech even led an official to wonder if he truly hailed from the indigenous community.

Rizwan’s Dreams Come True

And the celebration continues! Currently, he is pursuing the International Baccalaureate in Language at MRSM. Mr. Hairiazlisyam, one of Rizwan’s English teachers who is dedicated to helping Indigenous children like Rizwan, stated that while Rizwan’s English improved noticeably? after participating in the DoC English Speaking Workshop, it was beyond expectation that the kid managed to be accepted into MRSM. Rizwan became the first indigenous student from SK Permatang Keledang to enter this esteemed institution.

Rizwan embodies the belief that with persistence and determination, one can surmount any obstacle to achieve one's dreams. His story stands as a powerful testament to the transformative impact of education.

A heartfelt appreciation post from the Pekan District Education Office celebrating Rizwan's remarkable achievement.
