Pursuing Continuous Quality Improvement
While improving the quality of care delivered to patients has been a goal of healthcare professionals from the start, many landmark events and publications have served to increase awareness of the need for continuous improvement. Publications such as To Err is Human and Crossing the Quality Chasm magnified the need for urgent change to close the gap between the current state of health care and the desired state. Methodologies have evolved over the years to move from randomly searching for quality issues to continuous improvement and proactively using data for evidence-driven approaches to better outcomes. Most successful quality improvement efforts include collaboration from a wide variety of stakeholders, including clinicians, patients, families, and community.
