Purposeful Work

Purposeful Work

I went to a wonderful presentation on Friday, put on by?@CreativeMorningsAKL?https://creativemornings.com/cities/akl?A clever initiative that is enjoyed around the world. The concept is that a Creative gets to share their story with their community,?the community gets to vibe off each other while learning about another’s journey and contribution to the world. It’s inspiring and educational and a great way to begin any morning.?

Simone Speet,?https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/simone-speet/, from Maynard Design,?https://www.dhirubhai.net/company/maynard-design-consultancy/, was speaking about her immense talent for wayfinding. Now wayfinding is not a well understood discipline. For a chick like me who started branding in the 90s we use to call it signage. But signage is actually where it shows up. Wayfinding?is the science behind it, and when you add some purpose to the mix, the whole thing becomes quite magic.?

As I was listening to Simone tell the story of where she’s from, I saw that she is actually changing the world with her fierce talent. From the surface it may look like beautiful typography, colours and clever graphics to give a set of instructions, but underneath, is an intent to make spaces communicate more, create inclusiveness, by saying everyone we have thought of everyone, and we are not leaving anyone behind.?Great wayfinding communicates that this place respects people, you belong, we care, you can trust us, and as we do this thing we are going to make it as beautiful as we possibly can so you can appreciate the aesthetics too.?

Simone through her design is educating businesses about the importance of thinking of the needs of all people. They are not having to learn about inclusivity through the highlighting of what they are doing wrong, but the possibility of what they could be doing. So it gives them an incredible channel to actually hear. They are learning through the knowledge of person who can see we can achieve so much when we think deeply about what we are doing.?

Simone’s life purpose came shining through, she’s making the world a better place by creating ways to navigate spaces that are used by a diverse range of people. She’s allowing spaces to communicate who they are, why they are special and what’s important to them.?

When spaces are built for all people, all people feel belonging and when they feel this quality, they can put so much more of themselves into the world.??Who would have thought signage could be so clever. It’s a lucky business that gets Simone working on their project.?

Purpose is funny thing. Truth is once we get past basic survival, we’re all driven to betterment. We don’t need to quit our roles and work for a charity to put it into action. Learning how to add it?to our work means everything, as it changes our roles from a function to a life mission and Simone got to show that off in a stunning way.?
