'Purpose in the Youth with Bobby Hobert' - #youth4good article 32 by George Clark

Purpose in the Youth is a podcast that focuses on unfolding the stories of passionate people. I talked with Bobby about his passion for connecting with people, his challenges and the importance of spending time on positive projects to share and inspire others. After spending the better part of an hour on the phone together it became clear that his upbringing and family environment were key factors in shaping who Bobby is today.

1.What 'makes' a successful entrepreneur?

"Clear Vision! Willingness to work and putting your head down to get it done". Bobby goes on to talk about the importance of having clarity on what you want to do.

PURPOSE: "Understand what you want to do, have an end goal/dream and then reverse engineer it, figure out steps that will aid in getting you there. To be a successful entrepreneur it is important to have a growth mindset, embrace the changes coming at you from all angles. Being able to adjust and adapt to situations is a skill I have embraced and rate highly. You don't need to know everything about what you want to do, but taking action and perhaps most importantly being willing to put in the work while constantly learning will get you there. Embrace the journey."

2. How do you help others clarify their purpose?

What you may not know is that Bobby is an Uber driver, he drives to pay the bills and at this stage, it's a perfect test audience for his podcast.

"80% of people end up talking, sometimes deep conversations. I like to explore what peoples dreams are, why or why not they're following them. I like to explore what they enjoy, why they enjoy that. For some it may be watching movies, by reverse engineering that I break it down with them, it's actually film they like, I explore the possibilities of creating something around that for someone in the form of film reviewing. For others, it could be health and wellness or travel writing. Often society pigeonholes people, it discourages them dreaming big. I take the view of why not dream big, go for it DREAM BIG, find what makes you happy and go for it. Often people need an outside perspective, a nudge in the right direction or some positive interaction with their ideas."

3. What is your most powerful daily routine?

"Mental and physical health are really important to me. I meditate 15 minutes every day.

  • I make my bed right away
  • Make an iced coffee
  • Then meditate for 15 minutes.

Mindset is number 1. Being in control, having a clear head, feeling calm is really important. I have found this to be helpful especially if I am about to do a big podcast and need to calm down. So many things in life are out of your control, it's important to keep mental and physical strength. Even if it's getting outside for a walk, run or working out in the backyard. Find or create time in your day to get your body moving."

Do you have any tips for quieting the mind and meditating? "I use an app myself, 'headspace' is a really good one, it's guided and I have found that to be really helpful over the years. Meditation has helped me get clear on my purpose and passion. I think mental health awareness is something that should be talked about more, it's happening here and there, which is great but it is defiantly something to look out for and encourage conversations to happen."

4. What has your biggest challenge been?

"To believe in myself. Looking back that was definitely a big challenge, to know that you really can do anything and not care/worry about what others may think. Starting the podcast was a big risk, but it was well worth it.

The Summer after graduating college I was working for my uncle, he has a landscaping business in Massachusetts, in debt from college and earning $12 hour while my peers were off to join corporate America. I felt like I was back to square one. At the time it was tough, in reality, it was a good experience and reinforced my instinct to follow my passion rather than the social norm.

Once you back yourself and believe in yourself taking action becomes a whole lot easier. Commit to doing what you have to in order to reach that goal. Even if it is one step at a time."

We talked about who has had a big impact on him so far. Bobby credited both his parents and his friend Dylan Reese who is a music artist. "All these people have been there for me and supported me". In particular, his dad has always said to him that as long as you love what you are doing that's the most important thing. The love and support to try new things, experiment and follow what makes you happy is priceless. " I really do have to thank my dad for that, he has been a great mentor."

Below is Episode 50 of Purpose in the Youth. Bobby sits down with Tyler Babin (24 years old) who is the Editor & Film Director for Gary Vaynerchuck (CEO of VaynerMedia & VaynerSports).

Talking with Bobby he tells me that this episode, in particular, had a large impact on him, it reinforced that anything is possible if you are willing to work hard enough. This was recorded in NYC at the Vayner Media office, this added to the impact on Bobby as he, like many value the work and teachings of Gary Vaynerchuck.

Given this opportunity-filled world we are living in I asked Bobby if he had any advice for youth and entrepreneurs.

DREAM BIG, if you're not chasing something that is bigger than you, you aren't dreaming big enough and you're selling yourself short. However you have to be willing to work hard, work ethic and mindset are key."

Bobby is 24 years young and making things happen. He is a true example of entrepreneurship in the modern day. Originally from Chicopee Massachusetts, he has recently moved to LA in 2017 where he now lives and continues to host the Purpose in the Youth podcast.

Bobby's vision for life at 34, "in 10 years time I will continue to create amazing content that impacts and inspires people. Across podcasts, Youtube, blog and more. It's not about the money for me it's about following the passion. I will continue to wake up in the morning with urgency around my purpose and inspiring others, the more positive energy we can create the better".

"It's not about the money, its about passion. If you work hard enough, have a positive attitude the business, the money and connections will come."
