Purpose is so much more than a buzzword
How can we show consumers, colleagues and other companies that purpose is so much more than a buzzword? This was the question I kept coming back to at a roundtable discussion with the Social Market Foundation. We are working with them on a report on corporate purpose, bringing together a variety of different viewpoints to this important area. A degree of scepticism exists that makes people question whether a company can truly be guided by an approach to decision making that has more dimensions to it than pure profit motive.?
At Capita our purpose represents our licence to operate – and guides the company and its people through everything we do. We are committed to creating better outcomes for all our stakeholders and to being a responsible business.
Following our purpose has helped us through some challenging times. I can’t imagine the journey Capita, our brilliant teams and I have been on in the last few years without it. Appointing employee directors to our Board was a progressive move, one which brought a vital new perspective to the most senior level of the company. When we decided to pay the real living wage, we did so simply because it was the right thing do.

When Capita talks about purpose – we are talking about a vision and a common objective for all our colleagues that has permeated into the depths of our business and commercial decision making.?Being purpose-led not only instils a common sense of direction and culture into a company, but it also states clearly that we stand for something. It has been that confidence in knowing who we are and what we stand for that has informed our commercial decisions.
It is precisely because we are looking to the long-term sustainability of our venture that purpose is so important. A company that diminishes its role in society, its responsibility to its employees and its own purpose is one that is risking much of its future.
In short, purpose is far more than a buzzword. It’s fundamental to good business
