Purpose, Passion, & Profit : 5 Thoughts

How do you define Purpose?

1.?Passion is what you care about, what engages you in the moment, what does not tire you, gives you pleasure. Could be sport, math, parties, cars, whatever.

2.?Purpose is different from passion. Purpose is what gives you satisfaction?and meaning - in the still of the night, when you are alone, even when you are down, when you look back.?It could still be things that excite us, but the litmus is do they give us a sense of fulfilment, strength to persist in face of adversity, do stuff beyond oneself.

3. A sign of pursuing purpose is?some willingness and ability to?sacrifice. For instance when you are preparing for a difficult exam, or raising small children, or solving a difficult problem - not everything is engaging, pleasurable, or passion worthy. But it needs to be done. What sustains it? It’s a sense of purpose, fulfilment, satisfaction. Delayed gratification is hence a prerequisite of sorts.?

4. An excessive divide between professional and personal lives means both passion and purpose are often in short supply at work. Passion and purpose are often kept for the personal arena. There is a big opportunity to narrow this gap. Impact businesses can play that important role in society.?

5.?Profit and Purpose are often seen at opposite ends. In most cultures financial success and impactful work are often seen as two very different compartments viz. 'making money' vs. 'doing charity'. However, more and more people this century will accept this forced choice less and less. Many people will want to make impact and do well for themselves. It takes some courage to go against the mainstream value-system, but the tide is turning.

Very interesting read on Purpose, Passion and Profit. Absolutely agree that today more and more businesses understand the significance of impact. Rather impact-driven or purpose-led organization's are leading the way across the globe. The balance between purpose and profit is very critical as well as fragile. I think the difference lies with the decision making matrix for the company. At the time of conflict, does purpose takes priority or profit? That distinguishes a 'For-profit impact business' from a 'For-profit business with CSR / ESG focus'. Either ways it is great that impact businesses are seen as profitable and mainstream ventures, globally.

“A sign of pursuing purpose is?some willingness and ability to?sacrifice” found this very useful Ashish Rajpal. Almost any good outcome in life and work requires some delayed gratification.

Sharing a different perspective to purpose passion profit , it just might resonate with a few The basic premise in general is that - We do what we do as a tool or a medium to fill our insides. If flipped, it could be - we are full inside, and what we do outside is an expression of the fullness we carry inside. Hence when we get our purpose right, passion and profit are taken care of by themselves. Intent is the most important yet subtle thing. The purpose could be - One is carrying a particular talent or potential inside, and if expressed it through work, it is going to benefit so many and make this world a better place to live. Purpose - of doing could possibly be to express. Expression of the talent and qualities within oneself. Such work is tireless, enjoyable and top quality. Such work is always for the benefit of others. Passion - One automatically loves what one is talented with, so passion is a natural feeling Profit - Would become a natural side outcome, of talent well expressed. Pricing would be appropriate, deliver immense value and sell well since profit was not the motive or purpose of such business or a professional.
