The Purpose of a Non-Profit Board

The Purpose of a Non-Profit Board

If you are apart of a non-profit organization, then you should have a board or committee to help with the success of your non-profit. Do you know what the members of that board are supposed to be doing to help with the success of your non-profit?

The most important purpose of that non-profit board is to:

  1. Set policy and make decisions for the non-profit. The entire board as a governing body is responsible for the non-profit organization and its activities.
  2. The board/committee also helps to evaluate the non-profit progress toward strategic goals and initiatives. Basically the purpose of a non-profit board and committee is to make sure the non-profit as a whole is succeeding in the community you serve. If your goal as a non-profit is to educate teenagers about unplanned pregnancy, then the goal of your board is to make sure the education is readily available and accessible to teenagers male and female. So whatever your goals are for your non-profit the goal of the committee is to make sure your non-profit reaches success in the community with that goal.
  3. Another major responsibly of your non-profit board is to “Keep the non-profit on a mission”. It is very easy for a non-profit to get off its mission. It is so easy to see that there are so many other areas that need help or the community as a whole needs help. It has been said, that sometimes it is impossible to help everyone because you end up not helping anyone. This responsibility is a major one, your board must keep the non-profit as a whole on task and focused on the goal(s) at hand.
  4. “To advocate for your non-profit in the community”. The board must go to civic groups, social groups, school board meetings, the goal of the non-profit board members is to be out in the community advocating for the non-profit organization. They are tasked with telling good stories and telling the good news about the non-profit organization. Many times the actual people who are doing the work in the non-profit does not have the time or ability to also go out in the community and advocate for themselves. This means, you must recruit people who are comfortable in front of a camera, who can speak in public and even people who are knowledgeable with social media. The more your board members talk about the good things your non-profit is doing, the more volunteers you get and the more financial assistance you will receive.
