If it is your intention to rock up to a networking event and hand out as many of your business cards as possible, save yourself the bother, and stay at home.
I have witnessed first hand the busy bee like nature of some networking attendees, who buzz from person to person trying to pollinate as they go. It simply doesn't work.
The Referral Brain process has a strategy for networking and if followed on a consistent basis, you will see quality referrals come your way.
Assuming that the average networking event has 20 - 50 members/visitors, it is pointless trying to meet everybody during one session. Therefore focus your attention on two to three people. Listen to their stories both personal and business; and really listen. Don't just listen in order to jump in with what you want to say. Really pay attention.
If you allow someone time to talk about themselves and show genuine interest and empathy, you will make a friend for life. You will become known as the person who really "gets it." If you can add into that interaction a killer question such as " so how could I help you with your business?" or " so who could I introduce you to that would benefit your business?" you will certainly make an impression.
The whole purpose of networking is to help others. Be the person that can connect people. Become known as someone within the group who really understands. Define yourself as someone whom others really need to get to speak to.
Notice, at no point so far have you even mentioned that you are a mortgage adviser. But don't worry, that time will come and when it does, get ready for referrals.
