Purpose Makes Perfect

Since records began, human beings have been searching for meaning in their lives. Whether it’s through religious, spiritual, intellectual or interpersonal relationships and activities, we feel comforted by the idea that our lives have a purpose—that we’re not just existing for existence’s sake.?

It’s no different in the world of work.?

Recent research undertaken by Great Place To Work has found that people who see their jobs as meaningful and “more than just a job” are two to six times more likely to stay with their organization long-term. These findings challenge the perception that a “good” job is one that pays a lot of money or is just endlessly fun. In fact, what people want from a job is a sense that they are doing good or working towards a shared, important goal.?

But knowing this information is only half the battle because purpose in the workplace is currently in short supply. In the USA, only 52% of workers at average workplaces say they plan to stay at their company for a long time, according to a 2021 market survey of 14,000 global employees. When you begin to look at companies that are listed in the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For, however, this figure jumps to 86%.?

Similarly, only 79% of millennials report meaningful work compared to 90% of baby boomer workers, showing that - rather than rising - purpose in the workplace is actually depleting with new generations.?

So, how do we repair the damage???

Firstly, it’s useful to understand that purpose doesn’t only have to mean you’re creating life-saving medicines or solving climate change (although these would be great examples of purposeful work!) it can simply be an extension of your passions or enthusiasm for the people you work with.?

For business leaders, then, it’s important to curate a culture where enthusiasm is at the core of your business. Enthusiastic companies typically have better trust, more creativity and productivity, which helps a company’s overall bottom line. A great way to do this is to make sure you’re hiring and managing from employee strengths. Taking the time to find out and involve your employee’s passions will go a long way towards creating an enthusiastic, purposeful place to work.??

Purpose also equates to transparency and good organization. It goes without saying that if a company isn’t sure of its objectives, brand ethos or overarching story, everyone will feel the subsequent purposelessness.?

“Doing good” as a business should never be underestimated. If you lead and work with good, purposeful intentions, a wealth of benefits will come as a result.????????
