PICTURE OF THE WEEK - #RABBIT
POST OF THE WEEK - #WALLS
Most ‘great walls’ in history have been built for defence: to divide and exclude. But Africa’s Great Green Wall is being built for sustainability: to unite and restore. Launched in 2007, the vision is to grow a greenbelt of trees 15 kilometres wide, stretching 8,000 kilometres across the continent and spanning more than 20 countries, from Senegal in the West to Djibouti in the East. The Great Green Wall is rejuvenating life in every way: creating jobs, reversing desertification, increasing biodiversity, healing soils and making the Sahel region fertile again. Finally, a wall we can all celebrate and support.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK - #STRATEGIES
“We will all have to let go of cherished beliefs and strategies that are not working”
Quote from Sustainable Frontiers (book)
PODCAST OF THE WEEK - #SUSTAINABILITY
This episode unpacks sustainability. Before exploring how sustainability will change economics and business, we need to understand what sustainability is and what it is not, and how it came about as a force in our society. Sustainability began as an ideological crusade about 50 years ago when a few voices in the wilderness gave a clarion call about how our civilisation was on a path to self-destruction. They were ignored as fringe fanatics or doomsayers. Nevertheless, many of these early sustainability prophets were scientists who had done their fair share of homework before shouting their apocalyptic warnings from the hilltops.
POEM OF THE WEEK - GARDEN WISE
I’m learning how to plant new seeds / To nurture sprouts and let them rise / I’m pruning back and pulling weeds / As branches sway to gentle sighs
I’m listening to the songs of birds / And watching bees and butterflies / I’m reading nature’s book of words / As seasons turn, all lives and dies
领英推荐
I’m resting during winter’s calm / And blooming with the springtime flowers / I’m soaking summer’s healing balm / And letting go for autumn’s hours
I’m finding secrets, tracing flows / And keeping faith while cutting ties / I’m conscious how my spirit grows / I’m slowly getting garden wise
BOOK OF THE WEEK - THE AGE OF RESPONSIBILITY
Traditional corporate social responsibility (CSR) approaches have failed, leaving business stuck in the Ages of Greed, Philanthropy, Marketing and Management. Using Web 2.0 as a metaphor, I?show how business needs to radically transform if we are to ever reach a true Age of Responsibility. The required systemic approach is dubbed CSR 2.0 and characterised by five key principles: creativity, scalability, responsiveness, glocality and circularity. Citing more than 300 cases to illustrate ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’, the book describes how the new DNA of business is fast being decoded in the areas of value creation, good governance, societal contribution and environmental integrity. Having set out a compelling vision of the future, I describe how to get there by exploring change at the societal, organisational and individual level.
