POST OF THE WEEK - #PSYCHED

Sustainability requires sacrifices, right? Right. And wrong. If we keep selling sustainability as a burden, we will lose the battle for hearts and minds. It does require sacrifices – in time, money and effort – but psychology research (from Simon Fraser University, La Trobe University and London School of Economics and Political Science) all show that life satisfaction is enhanced by these very sacrifices. The message is clear: rather than droning on about everything we have to give up, personally and as a society, we should be celebrating how working for the bigger causes of sustainability enhances wellbeing and life purpose.

ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - UNDERSTANDING MULTI-CAPITAL

/ In reaction to shareholder value and inspired by the social, environmental and stakeholder movements, the 1990s saw the emergence of “new economics.” In fact, we can go back further to the early pioneer economists, such as E.F. Schumacher and his landmark?Small is Beautiful?book in 1973, subtitled “economics as if people mattered,”?and Kenneth Boulding who wrote about the “cowboy economy” – where resources are assumed to be infinite, like the open plains of the Wild Western Frontier. Boulding contrasted this with the call for a “spaceship economy,” where production and consumption are designed in a closed recycling system with finite resources.

POEM OF THE WEEK - A DREAM TO BE PAINTED

It is time to pause, to breathe, to savour / As the wheel of life spins in your favour / It’s a moment to rest, to gather, to reflect / To look back, to look forward and to accept

This is your season of fruits, of growing / After long years of ploughing and sowing / It’s a change in the rhythm, the motion / A new moon waxing to the sway of the ocean

It’s a time of rebirth, of conceiving / From a lifetime of giving, now receiving / It’s a fresh white canvass, a future untainted / New palette and brushes, a dream to be painted

BOOK OF THE WEEK - ICARUS

This creative collection, now in its 2nd edition, brings together love poems by Wayne Visser. The anthology traces love’s agony (“Broken Dreams”) and ecstasy (“Galaxies Cart-Wheeling”), from first blush (“Almost Strangers”) to full bloom (“Say ‘I Do!’”), as we fly to love.?

You’ve given me the gift of golden wings /?The endless sphere of blue imaginings /?The chance to rise above the silver clouds /?The will to cast off untold ghostly shrouds / Don’t fly too high / Don’t rise too fast / Don’t tease the sky / Don’t taunt the past / You’ve given me the hope of warmer days / The blessed kiss of the sun’s fiery rays.

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK - NEW EYES
Whether we have a life changing “Damascus” experience, or simply a refreshing “a-ha” moment, our world is suddenly different. We see things in a changed light; our perspective is somehow profoundly shifted. Then, looking back, we realise that we are not seeing new lands, but seeing with new eyes.
