POST OF THE WEEK - #LEGACY

What will you leave behind, for your children and the world? My wife and I were updating our will recently. We must all face that most inconvenient of truths: we too shall die. Sooner or later, in sickness or in health, we don’t know. Solicitors ask about assets, which we will pass onto our children. But the more interesting questions are non-financial. Who will inherit my 30 years of diaries and letters? My wife’s jewellery from her mother? The forest charity we will set up? And will the world be a better place because we lived?

ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - INCLUSIVE VALUE

Continuing my series on the evolution of value, inclusive value was a breakthrough concept that looked at social capital from a different angle, by shining a spotlight on the value that economic inclusion of low-income markets represents. This was described by strategy professors C.K. Prahalad and?Stuart L. Hart?as the opportunities at the ‘bottom or base of the pyramid’ (BOP). This pyramid is a visual representation of the distribution of income in world.

PODCAST OF THE WEEK - #GOVERNANCE
No alt text provided for this image

Over the past decades, numerous corporate governance codes have emerged, which require companies to give a more transparent account of how their business is being run and the impacts on the various stakeholder groups. One of the most recent and progressive documents is South Africa’s revised King Report which even makes explicit recommendations on sustainability reporting and social and ethical accountability. Shapeshifting goes beyond putting ticks into boxes, however. At the end of the day, it is once again about values and behaviour. In order to implement governance at a practical level, shapeshifting needs to occur in at least three areas: company incentive systems, decision-making processes and communication methods.

POEM OF THE WEEK - #IDEAS

I was born in the dark / Hardly more than a spark / And it’s true, I don’t know / Where I’m going / But be gentle on me / Do not judge what you see / I am just an idea / But I’m growing

I don’t yet have a name / Neither fortune nor fame / And it’s true, I can’t say / What I’m showing / But just give me some time / For my rhythm and rhyme / Will get better the longer / I’m flowing

I have things still to learn / I might speak out of turn / And it’s true, I can’t prove / What I’m knowing / But the wheel’s now in spin / If you just count me in / I may change your whole world / And keep growing

Life is lived in the in-between /?In transit /?Between coming and going /?Between staying and moving on /?Between here and there / And what we call home / What we call settled or contented / Is merely a resting place / A station for refuelling / A nexus for reconnecting / A junction for changing direction

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK - #ENCHANTMENT
We all long for enchantment, for a world of magic. But most of us learned to stop believing a long time ago. We only see enchantment through the eyes of our children, or through the flickering lens of a cinema projector. But the magic didn’t go away – we did. And we can return.

R. Edward ("Ed") Freeman is widely regarded as the "Father of Stakeholder Theory", having first written about the concept in 1984. He is also author of his most recent book, The Power of And: Responsible Business Without Tradeoffs. I'm incredibly grateful for these words of support about my new book, THRIVING:

“At last, a positive, upbeat set of ideas for our future. This book will inform all of us who are committed to a great future for our children."
