Purpose Driven Goals

Purpose Driven Goals

Another great quote from Bruce Lee is that if you spend to much thinking about a thing, you'll never get it done. Spend time each day moving towards your goals.

The truth is that numbers and goals don't drive people. People with a purpose drive the numbers and achieve goals. Research clearly shows that true motivation is driven by meaning and purpose rather than extrinsic rewards, numbers and goals.

Jon Gordon has spent years talking about purpose driven goals. He discovered that successful companies don't believe in strictly sales and revenue goals. Gordon found that numbers were just a byproduct of how well they were living and sharing their purpose.

While speaking to NFL players, he found that they all had the same goals - winning Super Bowls, achieving a certain number of yards, receptions, etc. He helped them realize that it's the commitment to the process, growth and purpose to reach these goals that will determine what they accomplish.

Gordon also says that doesn't mean you shouldn't measure numbers or have goals. It's okay to have a goal you want to achieve but once you identify a goal or outcome you will be more powerful and energized if you focus on your purpose.

I’m currently reading Drive by Daniel Pink, which is all about this - Intrinsic motivation > Extrinsic motivation. Just need to learn to tap into what really drives people.
