Pure energy

This is one of my creations. A big drawing that - to me - somehow evokes a dancing rabbit. Quite on theme with this lunar new year indeed!

I have been drawing from as far back as I can remember. Love the chemistry between surface and imagination. Free flow. To see where inspiration takes me. And what it makes visible. I prefer large-scale art paper. Because of the sensorial feedback from the surface. The minute imperfections of the grain. The way colour behaves, blends and settles over time in the fibre. I suppose my influences are as diverse as the cultures I have encountered. Starting from my birthplace in Africa (Cote d’Ivoire).

I never begin with a definite image in mind. It naturally appears after a few hours. As the curves dance and connect with one another. Branch out and coalesce into whatever the viewer perceives. My drawings are moments of dream time I think. When we let go of the ‘rational’ interpretation of the world.

This particular piece is from what came to be a series of fantastical beings. Expressed at their energy level. Connected to the whole around by particles and extensions. Looking at my work, I realise the near absence of sharp angles or stand-alone structures. And this to me says something about the flowing, organic nature and interconnectedness of beings. The dialogue between what appears at a given moment. And the larger whole, that is both backdrop and component. Every element is very much itself. Yet simultaneously fused into the whole. There cannot be one without the other. All are part of the bigger ‘fabric’ of pure energy.

Come to think of it... could this all be about sustainability?
