Punch List

Definition: a comprehensive list of items that do not follow the construction documents and specifications. It is compiled by the Owner, architect and/or general contractor during a walk-through near the end of the project.

Punch List

Items on a punch list are typically minor corrections, alterations or repairs. For example, during a walk-through you may discover...

  • broken ceiling tile
  • damaged floors
  • chipped paint
  • malfunctioning appliances
  • doors / drawers not opening properly
  • leaks
  • incorrect installation of equipment

These are all items that would need fixing and be included in the punch list.

Once the list is established, it is distributed to all subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers on the project, along with a schedule or deadline to complete their portion of the list. Upon the completion of the required fixes, the architect and general contractor will walk the project with the Owner to confirm all work is satisfactory.

Note: Final payment on a project can be withheld by the Owner until all items on the punchlist are 100% complete.
