Pump Up Your Job Search Results When You're Over 40

If you're experiencing job search ageism, you've got to do more to pump up your job search results.


Because doing the same things over and over, while expecting different results is the definition of insanity.

Here's one of the best ways to pump up your job search results when you're age 40+, that you probably haven't thought of yet:


Apply For Jobs Before They Are Posted - Hiring managers make hiring decisions, not HR departments nor recruiters. And 80% of the time, hiring managers choose someone they already knew before the job was posted. It comes down to the human nature of a hiring manager first thinking "Who do I already know, who do I already trust, who do I want on my team" and coming up with 2-3 people on their shortlist.


When you apply online or network after the job is posted, you're too late to be on this shortlist, even if you were the first person that applied to a job posting. Instead, you're hoping you land in 4th pace, that the top 3 candidates drop out and win by default.


Very few candidates apply for jobs before they are posted, instead calling/emailing contacts to ask about any openings. Other job seekers will see a job ad and then reach out to their contacts to ask them to pass their resume to the hiring manager, who has long before determined the top 3 candidates they already know. Instead, these candidates get frustrated by lack of response, or get interviews that at best get them to 4th place, hoping to win if the top 3 drop out.


Using those strategies burn through your contacts quickly. What then? Rely on networking through LinkedIn with its poor response rate?
