Pulse of a successful leader!!

Having spent over 30 years in two of the large geographies, I wanted to share my thoughts on the key levers of business success, when navigating a dynamic external environment and demanding internal expectations.

1.???Pulse of the market: Understanding external trends, government initiatives, geo-political contexts and most importantly, following the money, are key to making the right bet for success. The market is continuously evolving, segments are undergoing a technology transformation and the regulatory landscape is constantly changing. It is becoming much more competitive out there - be ahead of the game or get eaten! ?

2.???Pulse of your customers: Customers are much more knowledgeable and demanding these days. They are technically savvy and have many options in a globally connected world. It is equally important to account for the role culture plays, especially in a region as culturally dynamic as Asia. Here, ‘Culture eats strategy for lunch’ and it is a key driver of long-term, sustainable success. ?

3.???Pulse of your employees: In a world where uncertainty is a norm, transparent communication with your team is very important. Establishing a regular weekly or bi-weekly rhythm and maintaining an open-door policy improves trust and good communication. In addition, inclusiveness within businesses is of paramount importance. A satisfied employee is more engaged, more committed and can deliver results that meet expectations. ?

4.???Pulse of your organization: Companies are going through multiple challenges: The aftermath of the pandemic, complex geopolitical environments, and increased scrutiny of corporate governance among others. Business leaders must keep a pulse on how expectations are evolving and continue to emphasize internally the importance of creating value for our customers and shareholders.??

5.???Pulse of your own strengths and weaknesses: Leaders today have an immense responsibility (and face much higher expectations) to manage complexities in a dynamic world. Strong leadership requires an awareness of your strengths, whether in strategy, operations, or people management, and leveraging these to manage your weaknesses. To achieve common goals, it is important to bring in expertise, network with key stakeholders and drive open communication and collaboration. ‘A pupil is only as good as their teacher’: As a leader, you are responsible for continuously engaging with and supporting your team at multiple levels. ?

While the journey can be challenging and demanding, the outcome can be just as fulfilling and gratifying. Always remember to bring people along and celebrate every milestone! b

If we misread the pulse of any of these critical levers it can lead to an anemic growth. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
